Foreign Language Teaching

Foreign language teaching is not as easy as it may sound and it is different from teaching your native language. There are different and unique students in a foreign language program and it might be difficult for the teacher initially to get the students on his or her track. So in order to reduce that pain, the foreign language teacher can adopt the following methods:

1. Grammar translation method:

It is very important that before teaching the new words to the students, the grammar is kept in place. Only after getting thorough with the grammar, these students would know how exactly to use the words in the sentences without any grammatical mistakes.

2. Cognitive approach:

Cognitive approach includes writing, reading, listening and speaking. Initially, there was not much emphasis put on speaking, everyone was concentrating only on writing and reading. Later, people understood the importance of speaking and how essential it is for effective spoken skills. Thus, people then started introducing more audio and video study materials rather than just relying on blackboards and chalk pieces.

3. Direct method:

In this method, there are no intermediaries between the teacher and the student and they are in direct contact with each other. In this way, the students and teachers get more personal and they develop a higher level of understanding, thereby making the entire learning process more effective and smooth.

4. Silent way:

In this method, the teachers remain silent and just make use of projectors and pointers. There would be words and letters displayed on the screen and the students are expected to look at the letters and make the correct pronounciations.

The following are some of the skills that should be there in a foreign language teacher:

1. The teacher should have a very good command over the foreign language as well as the native language of the students. This would make it easier for her to express his or here ideas more clearly and effectively.

2. The teacher, in order to inculcate the habit of speaking in that particular foreign language among the students, should always communicate with the students in the foreign language during class hours. This would familiarize the language among the students.

3. The foreign language teacher must be very patient and calm in her teaching style as there are chances of students not picking up the ideas very quickly and might keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
