6th Grade Math Lesson
The 6th grade math lesson is based on identifying place values for digits; this includes whole numbers and decimal points. The 6th grade math lesson will involve utilizing numbers in a variety of forms such as whole numbers, mixed numbers, decimals, percents and fractions. Finding missing numbers and solving for N, is algebra at its basic form and is an integral part of the 6th grade math lesson. Sixth graders will be able to identify prime and composite numbers up to and including the number 50. A 6th grade math lesson will also prepare students to use the various symbols to indicate number relationship; less than, more than, and equals (<, > =). A 6th grade math lesson will teach students to apply the order of operations when they are working with whole numbers. Students will estimate to select a reasonable answer when computing whole numbers, fractions, and or decimals. They will also learn to compute efficiently when working with these math problems. The whole area of ratios is explored and students will use various models, real life situations, and symbols to represent the equations involved. Fortunately, there are various teaching aid models available on the Internet. Teachers can teach a 6th grade math lesson using a long division teaching aid. In this aid, teachers will be using double division to teach long division. In this way students will have some reinforcement for their division problems using a model that is actually easier. With double division students do not have to memorize multiplication tables or guess how many times one number will go into another one. This model will take longer to compute, but will probably prove to be less confusing or frustrating for students in the long run. There are wonderful online sources that make learning fun. Teachers can get their students to do what appear to be games, but actually they are solving math problems and completing their 6th grade math lesson. Children love math spy games; these spy games can help with problems using estimation. Math 6 Spy Guys is one such game. In this game the spy will set up a hide out in a tree house. He will have to estimate how high the tree actually is as he only has a ladder that reaches half way. Six graders are then asked to estimate how high that tree is by selecting from the pre designated answers, each answer will give them a math problem to solve, or was solved and displayed for them. When they select the right answer they are congratulated and the game continues to the next estimation problem to solve.
