Before going deeply into the Information systems strategic management, we need to understand what exactly an information system is. Consider an electronics manufacturer and supplier who sell electronic goods to the customers. The company tries to improve its sales and thus improving the profits by way of understanding the customer needs and complaints. Now in order to understand the customer needs, there needs to be a link or very good communication between the customer and the product supplier.
When you talk about communication there needs to be certain things that the customer needs to be answered. For example, the customer needs to understand the availability of a particular product, whether there is any room for improvement, substitute products, whether there is any low priced commodity in the same genre, whether the product can be supplied at lower costs etc. This was lacking in the early 1990s in the sense that the supplier had only information and data on the sales and the profits generated only. It was this that led to the concept of an information systems strategic management where the supplier could easily grasp the need of the customer and answer their questions very quickly.
Thus it is very clear that information systems is nothing but a computer which stores all the information regarding the quality of a particular product to its total sales and from customer needs to customer satisfaction levels. Hence it can be defined in general term as a database which has all the relevant data which helps a particular organization understand and implement the necessary improvement strategies in order to develop and satisfy the customer needs.
The steps taken to improve based on the data from the information systems is called as information systems strategic management. You are strategically managing the company's progress and satisfying customer needs based on the data in the computer systems. Thus information systems strategic management can be defined as a computer system that manages and implements shrewd business strategies which will result in the good of a business organization.
It is a very useful tool which helps to gain a competitive advantage over others. It also helps a company stay on their toes all the time in the sense that the company is always updated about the customer needs, the changing market trends and the scope for a new product development. Thus it is pretty much clear that Information systems strategic management is an indispensable tool in any service and supplier industry.
