Earth Science Careers

Earth Science careers mainly focus on the study of what is happening with the earth. Geoscientists work in a variety of areas that include production of gas and oils, exploration of gas and oils, production and development of mines, pits, and quarry sites. These scientists are also involved with the construction of dams and buildings, as well as studying the underground movement and behaviours of waters. Environmental geoscientists are all about air, water, and land that human, animal, and plants live on.

Although some of these scientists work normal office hours, they also have occasional weekend and evening work that is necessary to meet pending deadlines. They are involved with exploration, production, and surveying which often takes very long hours and pure dedication. To be a earth scientist, you need to have practical skills so that you can use technical instruments and equipment, good communications skills both spoken and written, and be able to work independently with little or no supervision or as part of a greater team. These scientists require great power of observation and must have a methodical approach when it comes to solving problems. They must also have a serious and deep interest in the environment and the sciences that make the earth what it is.

Entry into this field of science is very competitive so students need to graduate at the top of their class. These scientist receiving much daily on the job training and usually are not considered experienced until they have five years experience under them working with a qualified scientist. These scientist often progress into management level, but it takes many years. Other become self-employed and enter into the field of consulting while others go into research fields or teaching fields. Many of these scientists enjoy additional benefits and often travel around the world when there work is involved.
