Advancement in a filed of study is the only way that you will understand it thoroughly and biology is one key area that has many fields of specialization. By the time you are progressing into your PHD, you must have gone through some various levels of specialization already; you are not new to specialization. One thing about PHD biology programs is that they are so specialized that you may be spoilt for choice. Molecular biology and biochemistry are split into many other fields of specialization; choosing becomes a tiring task. Despite the many areas that you may be interested in specializing in, you have only one choice (unless you want to do hundreds of PhDs).Here are some tips

Look for a niche that you can fit in. I'm sure you are familiar with finding your niche by now. You must be having several in mind but you have to choose one. Your special place of interest is the definition of a niche. If you are very much interested in pursuing a niche that has been pursued by all and sundry, you are not going to make any impact. Look for something unique for yourself. Your niche should cause a stir amongst scholars of your caliber and inspire others into your field of biology. That is the reason why Jean Piaget, Dr Leo Baekerland, Sigmund Freud and others have never been forgotten. If you have found a niche that is not as unique as you thought, try to give it a different angle, a different look to it. There is nothing worse than scholars churning out the same content year after year; it will be boring.

Once you have identified a niche, look for something you can contribute to your niche. There is nothing better than having a name in your field pf specialization to pay off all the hard work, If you are not bringing something new to the niche, look for another one; churning out old concepts year after year is regurgitation, and it will not help.

Consider online programs. There are hundreds of them out there and they can point you to the right direction if you have not found a niche as yet. Online PhD biology programs require lots of personal discipline and excellent research skills. Your writing skills need to have matured by now.
