Tips for Taking the GREs

Getting Help with the GREs from www.gre.org

How can I prepare for the GRE General Test?
A CD-ROM containing GRE POWERPREP Software - Test Preparation for the GRE General Test will be sent to you when you register for the GRE computer-based General Test. POWERPREP can also be downloaded now for free. The software includes test tutorials, practice questions with explanations, and two actual computer-adaptive tests for the verbal and quantitative sections. The software also includes sample topics and essays for the analytical writing section, and advice on how to write effective essays for the Issue and Argument tasks. POWERPREP lets you practice writing essays under simulated GRE testing conditions with the same GRE word processing and testing tools that appear on the test. Note: GRE POWERPREP is only IBM or PC compatible.

Convenient Writing Practice for the GRE General Test; cost: $10
Prepare for the analytical writing section of the GRE General Test with ScoreItNow!™ Online Writing Practice, a low cost web-based service. Get immediate scores on your essay responses and review general suggestions for improving essay writing skills!

And for the other parts of the test: For $15: Enhanced Service:

  • An assessment of your strengths and weaknesses in the skill areas

  • A comparison of your performance in each skill area to the performance of others who have taken the GRE General Test

Fee Waivers (Your undergraduate college may be able to help with this.)

The GRE Program makes available a limited number of GRE fee waivers for college seniors and unenrolled college graduates who meet eligibility requirements. Fee waivers may be used for one General Test and/or one Subject Test.

To be eligible, you must be:
a U.S. citizen or resident alien; and
a college senior receiving financial aid through an undergraduate college in the U.S., a U.S. territory, or Puerto Rico, or a returning unenrolled college graduate who has applied for financial aid; and an unenrolled college graduate whose ISIR indicates self-supporting status and a contribution of not more than $1,600. (Note: There’s more to this!)

To apply for a GRE fee waiver:

  • Contact your financial aid office to see if you qualify.

  • Once your eligibility is established, the financial aid office will issue you a fee waiver and a copy of your ISIR.

  • You must register by mail using either the computer-based or paper-based registration materials.

  • If you are registering for more than one test, all registration materials must be received together with the fee waiver and ISIR or your registration form will be returned to you unprocessed.

  • Letter requests, photocopies, and faxes of fee waivers will not be accepted.
Fee waivers are not retroactive and they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.
