Bonfire of the Leadership
Reunion at NJLA

Photos by Pete Bromberg

NJLA Conference Chair Cindy Czesak offered a bonfire on the beach as the site of the reunion of the grads of Emerging Leaders and the Leadership Academies (NJALL) and it was glorious! ALA President Loriene Roy joined the fun on Wednesday night of NJLA. The air was cool but the fire was warm and s’mores were hot! Just another reward for those on their leadership journey!

From NJALL Evals…

“I’ve been working feverishly since I got back to transform my library. Thank you for a great experience!”

“Thank you so much for a truly transformative experience. I know it will take a lifetime to process all that information, but at the same time, I feel equally sure that I am already seeing many things from a new perspective. I thought I would dread returning to work after four wonderful days in an alternate reality, but re-entry was actually exciting and invigorating.”

“I have had some major revelations in the past week since we parted and much of the information is still resonating with me and will be for quite awhile…”

CJRLC Planning
Process

Our three year plan is finished next year (June ‘09) so it must be time to start another one! We are beginning by asking each of the committees to meet and discuss their needs/desires for the next three years. This would be a great time to join one of the committees: Tech Group, CJILL, CJARL, Book Eval, SchoolGroup, InfoLit. Is one of them right for you?

We’ll gather the information we get from the committees and present it to the CJRLC Executive Board when they meet on August 11 with consultant Barbara Miller. And before we extend too much sympathy to the Board for having to meet all day in August, we should point out that the meeting will be on the beach at the Stella Maris Retreat Center in Long Branch.

It’s not too soon to be thinking about where you would like to see CJRLC move in the next three years! We hope to hear from you...

NJALL’08: Leadership

Facilitator Maureen Sullivan, Norma Blake, Leslie Burger, Karen Hyman, Peggy Cadigan and Connie Paul shared their insights on leadership with a group of enthusiastic leaders in training at the Stella Maris Retreat Center in Long Branch, May 4-7. All types of libraries and all parts of the state were represented by the attendees, who enjoyed making new friends and walking on the beach when not in session. Pictured are JP Porcaro, Elena Tsomaeva, Nathalia Bermudez and Carla Guerriero.

Program
Coordinator's
Notes

Summer is almost here, and CJRLC has some special programs for you!

Our Summer Time Treat Program with Dr. Dornish and Linda Braun will take place on Wednesday, July 30th! Everyone is welcome to attend this entertaining and enlightening program at Battleground Country Club. You can see both speakers and have lunch with your colleagues for $30. See p. 1 for more information. Sign up today!

Also, if your library has made the move to Microsoft Office 2007, or if they are considering it, you’ll want to attend this program! CJRLC will hold a one-day, hands-on workshop, Office 2007: An Introduction, which will cover what’s new and what’s different in this latest version of MS Office. This is an overview and requires a basic working knowledge of windows. The program is $25 (includes lunch), on Thursday, August 14, 10:00am-2:30pm, at CJRLC. The registration flyer is available on our website.

Fall will bring some exciting new things too! Keep your eyes out for Savvy Staff starting up and EBSCOhost 2.0 training! A new EBSCOhost interface will be released this July — you can see a preview here. Also watch for Introductory webinars!

Of course, gaming will continue! Watch the wiki and join our gaming listserv if you’re interested! The video game world never sleeps and we will be adding some new items to the kits! Keep on playing!!

Getting to Know...
Heidi Bloom Leeds

It was in March that Heidi Bloom Leeds joined CJRLC to allow Susan Buccellato the opportunity to devote her time to completing her college education. Like Susan, Heidi was a casualty of the Manalapan-Englishtown School library lay-offs, where she had been working at Milford Brook for the past six years. She is a local girl who attended the Manalapan and Freehold Township schools as a child, and returned from Long Island with her husband, after completing her BA in English, with minors in Communications and French from Hofstra University.

It was only when she decided to volunteer in her daughter’s classroom that she realized she enjoyed being in the school environment. She joined the PTA as the library liaison and began volunteering for Esther Peck at the Milford Brook library. When Esther

and Susan moved on to the Wemrock Brook School, it was a natural step for her to move into the clerk’s job at Milford, working with Dara Hecht.

She has 2 children: Sara, 22, who is graduating from Cook College/Rutgers University, and Jeff, 14, who will be entering Allentown High School in September. As in the past, when Sara entered Cook, Heidi became involved in the Parent’s Association and is currently the Co-President. She will continue volunteering there as long as they need her.

Heidi enjoys music, cooking, gardening, spending time with her family, and especially reading; and one day she hopes to achieve a little quiet (which she doubts she’ll ever get with a teenager living at home!)

She now lives in Millstone Township with her family.

Welcome, Heidi!
