Want a Better Website!?
CJRLC is
offering several ways to improve your library website.
On
Monday, March 3, 10am-1pm, at Long Branch Public Library, Bud Kraus, of
The Joy of Code, will present a program on 7
Steps to a Better Website. This program is for anyone who has
any responsibility for the design and development of the web site,
including those with oversight responsibilities. This is not a hands-on
program, but Bud will go over the three phases to a better site:
Pre-Production, Production, and Release.
Then, on Monday, March 10
and Monday, March 17, Bud will conduct parts 1 and 2 of his hands-on
workshop, Great
Web Design with CSS. This workshop takes place over two full
days and is recommended for someone who knows at least something about
HTML. You need not know anything about CSS (cascading style sheets) -
Bud will teach you!
Ask yourself if you know how
to make a table, a list, a link, or a paragraph, and if the answer is
yes -- or close, this class is for you.
If the answer is no, you can
still sign-up for Bud’s self-paced, online course, The
Joy of Code, which will introduce you to all of this and help
you with your website skills. See our website
for more information, or contact amy@cjrlc.org.

What’s
the goal? A web tool for NJ citizens to find health information at a
library near them — public, academic, or hospital.
What will
it look like? A map of NJ with interactive sites linking to libraries,
and with an index by medical term.
Who’s
working on it? A committee of interested librarians headed by Cathy
Boss, Michelle Brewer, and Ingrid Bruck.
What’s
next? A survey of libraries in the state to get updated subject
specialties. Coming this month!
To See Ourselves
As
Others See Us
CJRLC’s
Fall Membership Meeting took place on December 19 at the Peddie School
in Hightstown. We were lucky to have OCLC’s George Needham as the
featured speaker!

George Needham, OCLC, and host Brian
DuBrule, Librarian, Peddie School
George
spoke about some of the findings from Perceptions of Libraries and
Information Resources, a report that OCLC published in 2005, and Sharing,
Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World, their latest report.
There
some fascinating findings for libraries in these reports as you can see
for yourself when you download George’s presentation
which is available on our website.

This
month we have another excellent program with Susana Baumann - 12
Magic Computer Phrases Library Personnel Need to Know in Spanish!
Susana’s
programs are always fun and interactive, and this workshop is no
exception! It will equip library staff with the knowledge and
resources to meet the technology needs of their Spanish speaking
patrons. You need not have any prior knowledge of Spanish to attend.
Participants will learn customer service vocabulary and grammar, as
well as some customs and values their Spanish speaking patrons have
about technology, in order to better assist them in the library.
The
workshop takes place on Wednesday, February 27th, 9:30-3:30, at the
Ocean County Library Lakewood Branch. Cost is $30 and includes lunch.
See the flyer
in this mailing and on our website. Please contact Carol Davis at carol@cjrlc.org
/ 732-409-6484 to attend.
Spotlight On
Committees:
Infolit
This committee discusses
issues of teaching library skills of all types, from elementary school
through adult. The Help Pages on our website was project of Infolit.
This project is in need of
updating, and there are many other issues and aspects of Information
Literacy to address, especially with so many new technologies emerging
so quickly.
If you are interested in
being a part of this committee, please contact amy@cjrlc.org.
