To See Ourselves as
Others See Us?
Membership Meeting
December 19
The Peddie School

Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World is OCLC’s just published report and OCLC VP George Needham will be at our December 19th Membership Meeting to tell us about it. It reports what we know, that web use is up, and what we don’t want to know, that use of library web pages is down. And lots of other things.

The meeting will be held at the lovely Peddie School in Hightstown. Tours of the library, refreshments and networking are available at 2:30, the business meeting with state and Region updates at 3:30, and the keynote at 4:30-5:30. All region members are welcome. New Executive Board members will be introduced.

Call or email CJRLC to tell us you are coming and a name tag will be ready for you (CE certificate if you need it, too.)

Why (In)Numeracy
Matters

The Princeton Trenton Chapter of SLA is hosting Princeton U’s Professor Brian Kernighan on Wed. Dec. 5, 5-8 PM in the Joseph Henry Room, Jadwin Hall, Princeton U. Dinner is at 6 and the program at 7. The cost for non-members is $30 and all are welcome. Send a check to Elana Broch, 29 Springwood Dr., Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.

Got Gaming?

CJRLC wants you to find out more about gaming and is putting together a pilot project on gaming in libraries.

If you have been wanting to try holding a gaming night or tournament in your library but haven’t been sure what to do, your chance is coming!

Six Gaming Kits are being put together — three with Ninteno Wii consoles and three with XBox360’s — and they will be available for loan to all region libraries (whether you’re public, school, academic, or special).

Lots of help, too! (See page 2.)

Continuous Improvement:
A Pilot Project in Making Your
Library More Efficient —
One Process at a Time!

Ever have the feeling that some of your work processes aren’t as efficient as they need to be? CJRLC and INFOLINK are sponsoring a pilot project for work teams to improve their productivity. Choose an area of your library that needs rethinking, select a team of 3-4 who can fix it, and sign up now. Including someone who has a bigger picture of your operation will make it easier to teach others in your organization how to do the same thing!

We will meet February 4, March 10, April 14, and June 9 – 2008, 9:30-4, Monroe Twp. PL. The cost is $300 for the team of 3-4 for all four programs and includes breakfast and lunch, thanks to the significant underwriting by the two cooperatives. Our limit is 50 attendees (14-17 teams).

This program can change how your library functions! Start planning now… A flyer is in the December mailing and a wiki is coming...

No Time for Programs?
Borrow and Listen...

There is a list of our conference tapes and videos on our website. These are available to borrow any time. In addition, we have the CDs with programs coming from the October AASL in Reno and the October Internet Librarian in CA. Find out the newest and the latest without ever leaving your house or your car! Email sue@cjrlc.org to request one!

Got Gaming? continued…

You’ll get training on how to set-up and run the gaming nights and tournaments, as well as a wiki where questions, best-practices and templates for everything will be found!

Guitar Hero III, Dance, Dance Revolution, Halo 3, and the Wii sports games are just a few of the selections that will be available to play on the consoles!

And seniors love gaming — have you tried Wii bowling? Family nights for all ages are also popular library programs. The choices are many and varied!

Why should there be gaming in libraries?

For one thing, hosting gaming activities at your library builds community and demonstrates relevance to a different, and sometimes difficult to reach, audience — 95% of teenage boys play video games!

Research, trial and error, and cooperation are often necessary to win games and are valuable skills in the real world. 2 Supporting gaming shows you support innovation, creativity, and a participatory culture. And gaming isn’t the only social activity to be held in a library — there’s the knitting group and the book club too — having fun at the library never hurts!

    Watch for more info!

Consumer Health
Initiative Update

Our goal is a web map of NJ library health resources and we hope all types of NJ libraries will want to participate. To find out where the good health information is, we will be conducting a state-wide survey. If your library has a source of current health-related info, we hope you will want to be involved by answering the survey when it is emailed to you early in January. Michelle Brewer and other members of HSLANJ are working on the survey now.

NJASL Highlights

This is the first time NJASL was held on three school days (without a weekend day) because the Ocean Place wouldn’t provide a Saturday or Sunday. So next year the conference will move back to the East Brunswick Hilton.

This year’s keynotes were outstanding! Maud Dahme, former president of the New Jersey State Board of Education, now devotes her life to Holocaust and genocide education. She tells her own story of being a “hidden” Jewish child in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation. It is a spell-binding story and is available on DVD from NJN.

Pam Munoz Ryan, author of Esperanza Rising, told of her three years work to prepare for her new book, Paint the Wind. She had the audience laughing until we cried by reading letters she received from children. She is as compelling and engaging a speaker as she is a writer. (Have you read Esperanza Rising, based on her grandmother’s life as a Mexican field worker? You will love it!)

Allison Zmuda was the Administrator’s Breakfast speaker. Her challenge to us is to define our mission and to work with teachers and administrators so that all activities aim toward that goal. Check her out!

Know a Mover & Shaker?

The seventh annual Library Journal Movers & Shakers supplement will celebrate new professionals who are moving libraries forward! Several New Jerseyans have been featured before!

Want to nominate someone? Go here. Deadline is November 28th (but, if you submitted anything prior to Nov. 5th, please resubmit as LJ experienced technical difficulties).

Make Time to Learn

Having trouble finding (or justifying, to yourself or others) time to learn new things? Check out the blog post 10 Ways to Find Time for 23 Things from the Librarians Matter blog.

Some hints:
    Buddy Up - work with a friend;
    15 Minutes a Day - schedule it in;
    Week-by-Week - commit to it one week at a time;
Your Interests - work them in when trying/learning new tools.

Spotlight On
Committees

CJARL is Central Jersey Academic Reference Librarians’ Group. They meet to discuss practical issues affecting academic reference librarians.

If you want to share best practices, assessments of products and materials, and network with your colleagues, please join us for the next meeting, Friday, Dec. 7th, 10-12, at OCC.

Check out their blog, too: http://cjarl.blogspot.com/.

Getting to
Know…
Sue
Buccellato

Last month we said goodbye to Mickey and this month we are welcoming Sue Buccellato, who will be working two days a week at CJRLC. She will be taking over most of Mickey's duties — CD&L, program signups, (watering the plants), and, of course, the mailings! This semester she is working on Mondays and Thursdays, because that’s when she is not in class at Kean U, where she is getting a BA in Elementary Education with a concentration in English.

For 15 years Sue was the library aide in Manalapan-Englishtown schools, most recently at Wemrock Brook School, where she worked with librarian Esther Peck. Last year

those positions were abolished, and Carol immediately thought of Sue when Mickey announced her retirement. Sue has gone on most of our summer trips with her sister Peggy and she has taken many classes with CJRLC over the years. She loves children’s literature, so her favorite trip was to Dr. Dornish’s home a couple of summer’s ago, where he showed us his amazing collection of art from children’s book illustrators.

Sue is the mother of four grown children. One son lives in Seattle, and she is looking forward to seeing the new public library when she visits. She has lived in Manalapan for the past 32 years.

One of her favorite pastimes is going with the NJ Outdoor Women’s League, NJOWL, which has hiking, kayaking, bird-watching, and other nature oriented activities.

You will meet Sue at the Membership Meeting on Dec. 19th. Welcome, Sue, to CJRLC!
