Membership
Meeting
December 19
The Peddie School |
OCLC has
just completed its third major survey about the perception of libraries.
Join us on Wednesday, December 19, as OCLC’s George Needham focuses on
three OCLC reports that help us understand the environment in which
libraries are operating today, the way libraries are perceived by online
users, and shifting attitudes toward sharing and privacy online.
The
meeting will be held at the lovely Peddie School in Hightstown. Tours of
the library, refreshments and networking are available at 2:30, the
business meeting and Region update at 3:30, and the keynote 4:30-5:30.
All region members are welcome. New Executive Board members will be
introduced.
Call or
email CJRLC to tell us you are coming and a name tag will be ready for
you (CE certificate if you need it, too.)
Science
Spectacular

Education
Commissioner Lucille Davy, State Librarian Norma Blake, Center for the
Book Chair Renee Swartz, SCILS Dean Gus Friedrich, and Newark PL
Director Wilma Grey celebrated science literacy at the Center for the
Book program at Liberty Science Center on September 25. It was a
sell-out crowd and a great success!

Mickey is Retiring
November 15!
Did you
know her name is Charlotte VanOstrand? We all call her Mickey, and she
has been part of CJRLC since 1992! In her two to three days a week she
answers the phone, gathers the delivery stats, gets out the mailings,
covers the office when Carol is out, and does what needs to be done.
Mickey is responsible for the way many of our publications look, and she
enjoys getting the perfect colors together. She and her husband Larry
moved to Toms River recently. We wish her the very best of healthy and
happy retirements!
CJRLC Begins Consumer
Health Initiative
Partnering with HealthyNJ, the NJ Hospital Association and HSLANJ, CJRLC
is working on an online map for NJ citizens to locate up-to-date
accurate consumer health information. A survey will be sent out shortly
to public, academic, and hospital libraries to compile a directory of
special collections of print and online information. The map will be
geographic and topical.
Once the
information has been gathered and organized, the marketing committee
will work on ways of getting the word out. Stay tuned (or get involved!)

NEW FEATURES
FROM EBSCO
In
October several representatives from EbscoHost were in the regions
offering information and training on the latest and greatest in the
EbscoHost databases. If you weren’t able to attend the sessions, here
is a quick run-down of some of the highlights. Please contact amy@cjrlc.org
if you want additional help on these databases and features.
With your
administrative log-in and password there are many ways you can customize
the way EbscoHost looks to your community, whether that be students, the
public or professionals. You can set-up links that go directly
from your homepage to certain databases, i.e., the Biography Collection,
Science Reference Center, Searchasaurus, or NoveList.
RSS
feeds are now available so that users may save searches to be run
and for the results to be sent directly to them, without conducting the
search over and over.
You can
set up the Ask-A-Librarian feature and have your patrons contact
YOU!
Some of
the new databases include: History Reference Center, Literary
Reference Center, Professional Development Collection and the Points of
View Reference Center.
Jill
Tweedie is the sales representative for our area and can be reached at jtweedie@ebsco.com.
You can get help with the advanced features for Ebsco either by
contacting Ebsco directly or by contacting our office. Additionally,
David Love is the Tech Help contact at dlove@ebscohost.com.
If you
need your administrative login and password, contact customer service at
800-758-5995. There are also online tutorials to help you at http://eadmin.ebscohost.com.
These new
databases and features are sure to please your community especially if
you customize yours!

Gaming In the
Region
A small
sub-committee has been formed to create “gaming kits” which will be
lendable to libraries in the region.
Libraries
will be able to try out consoles such as Xbox 360, the new Nintendo Wii,
as well as find out how to hold tournaments.
There are
many benefits to gaming in libraries — be sure to
watch for more info coming soon!
New Database to
Further
Diversity & Inclusion in
the Library
It can be
challenging to come up with ideas for new programs and to find ones that
add diversity and inclusion to your library. Valerie Bell, Ocean County
Library, will present a workshop on a new diversity knowledge database,
entitled the Diversity Exchange, that allows you to get ideas from
colleagues around the state and the nation.
This
searchable database will help all libraries and librarians, but
especially anyone with “programming” or “outreach” in their
titles. Come find out how to browse, search and add programs in this
hands-on workshop.
The
Diversity Exchange was developed by the Ocean County Library as a 2007
ALA Conference Program and was featured in a WebJunction webinar course
on October 16, 2007. WebJunction’s webinars are archived and can be
viewed at any time by going to their website.
The free
workshop will be Tuesday, November 13 at the Long Branch Public Library,
from 10:00-12:30pm. Please contact Carol Davis 732-409-6484, carol@cjrlc.org,
to register. There is also a flyer in this mailing.
The
workshop is brought to you through the NJ State Library Statewide
Diversity Leadership Grant, supported by the NJ State Library and funded
by the Institute of Museum & Library Services.

What
does the future hold for libraries in New Jersey? A Blue Ribbon Task
Force on the Future, created by New Jersey State Librarian Norma
Blake, will meet once a month for six months in order to brainstorm
and generate innovative ideas for shaping the future of New Jersey’s
Libraries.
I join
four other people from our region on this Task Force: Marian Bauman,
Cathy Boss, Janie Hermann, and Nicole Polite. I am honored and excited
to be a part of this group and our first meeting at the State Library
in September got us off to a great start!
The
creativity and enthusiasm of my colleagues was inspiring and we will
be using a blog to track our progress. The blog will be made public
after the final report from the task force is made to Norma Blake
containing our suggestions.
It is
exciting to know that NJ is committed to continuing the groundbreaking
work begun at the Mid-Atlantic Futures Conference - more info on that
can be found here: http://www.palinet.org/futures/
malfuturesconference.aspx.
SPOTLIGHT ON
COMMITTEES
The
Central Jersey Interlibrary Loan Committee met October 16th and heard
from Scherelene Schatz about some enhancements for JerseyCat.
Be sure
to check her blog at http://www.jerseycat.blogspot.com
for news and information, and you see “What’s New With JerseyCat”
here: http://www.jerseycat.org/.
Everyone is welcome to attend the CJILL Committee meetings. They have
a blog at: http://cjrlc.blogspot.com.

Update
on
Roz
Reisner |
Apparently there is life after CJRLC! Just back from a week in Paris
with husband Gerald, Roz is as busy as ever. Roz and Gerald spend much
of their time at their Manhattan apartment, enjoying museums, plays,
and city life.
The
proposal is almost done for Roz’s new readers’ advisory book on
memoir. She is also moderating a panel of writers, agents and editors
on November 27 for the Women’s National Book Association: What’s
True, What’s Not — Redefining the Memoir. It will take place in
NYC at the Small Press Center.
And, of course, Roz
is still active with the Association of Jewish Libraries and is busy
planning activities for Jewish Book Month for her synagogue.
Go, Roz!
