SLA Joint Meeting
September 27
George Needham
Changing Perceptions of Libraries

Join the NJ and Princeton-Trenton SLA Chapters at their joint meeting on Thursday, September 27, 5:30 PM at the Rutgers Club in New Brunswick. All are welcome!

OCLC’s George Needham will talk about their international study, Changing Perceptions of Libraries. Look for registration information at http://sla-princeton-trenton.pbwiki.com.

Getting the Word Out:
Libraries Matter!

With funding from Verizon, NJLA commissioned a survey of NJ citizens’ views of their public libraries. SCILS professor Dan O’Connor called results the most positive of any that he has seen. NJ voters value their public libraries!

In four meetings around the state, library directors, staff, trustees and friends will be introduced to the study and given tips and tools to use those results to increase funding for NJ public libraries. The first meeting is CJRLC’s on September 19 at the Marlboro Branch of Monmouth County Library. Coffee at 9:30, program 10-12.

Other meetings are Thursday, September 20th at Elizabeth Public Library, Tuesday, September 25th at Cherry Hill Public Library, and Wednesday, September 26th at Parsippany Public Library. Call or email carol@cjrlc.org to register for any of the meetings.

Rutgers SCILS
Celebrates 25 Years with
Gala October 12

Come celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Rutgers SCILS at a dinner gala at New Brunswick’s beautiful new Heldrich Hotel, sponsored by The SCILS Alumni Association. The dinner will consist of a cocktail hour (with open bar), a sit-down four-course meal, musical entertainment and dancing, and a program currently being prepared by the SCILS Alumni Association which will honor beloved people in and to the SCILS alumni community. Our goal is to make this event something that will be remembered for many, many years to come. More info at http://www.scils.rutgers.edu/alumni/.

Program Coordinator's
Notes

Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.

I read this somewhere a few months ago and it really stayed me. Our field is experiencing rapid changes and CJRLC wants to help you deal with that by offering programs and services addressing these changes.

Tech Challenge 1 and 2, and an upcoming Tech Challenge 3: Library Challenge! acquaint you with Web 2.0 and show you how your library can benefit from them.

We are also pleased to continue to present the ever popular programs such as Hands-On Book Repair with Kim Avagliano at Monmouth County HQ.

If you have a need or an idea for a program, please contact me at amy@cjrlc.org. I’d love to hear your ideas!

SPOTLIGHT ON
COMMITTEES

There are several CJRLC Committees, each serving to support a particular area of interest. This month’s spotlight is on:

The Technology Group which educates librarians and fosters communication on issues of technology. The group meets monthly and anyone may attend.

Meetings are free, and you need not be a “techie” or technology expert to join us! The next meeting is on September 18, 3-4:30 pm, at the CJRLC offices and will be about digital audiobooks.

Come on out! David Lisa (dlisa@wlbpl.org) and Krista Horan (khoran@neptunetownship.org) are Co-Chairs of the committee. There is also a blog at http://cjrlctech.blogspot.com.

Getting to Know Amy Kearns

Amy and Nigel

Amy Kearns, the new Program Coordinator at CJRLC, started her library career as a part-time intern at the Clifton Public Library before becoming a full-time librarian there upon receiving her MLIS from SCILS in 2003. She next went to Paterson to be Head of Reference, while being very active both in NJLA and HRLC.

Amy was the Chair of the HRLC Technology Committee and is currently Vice President of the NJLA Information Technologies Section.

A blogger, reader, knitter and an information-technology-lover, Amy enjoys traveling with her husband and loves spending time with their 8-year-old English Bulldog, Nigel.

Amy received a BA in Philosophy from Rutgers, and is currently taking online courses to become a certified Synchronous Learning Expert. She is very excited about exploring the many possibilities for using virtual spaces for meetings and trainings for library staff throughout New Jersey.

As facilitator for WebJunction webinars, Amy brings expert speakers to a nation-wide audience. The next webinar is September 11th (more information).

Amy is excited about re-running last Spring’s Tech Challenge, and a brand new Tech Challenge 2. Also, look for Tech Challenge 3: Library Challenge!

You can read Amy’s posts on Library Garden where she blogs with other NJ librarians.

Welcome, Amy!
