CJRLC Membership
Meeting
Highlights

There was the usual — approving the budget and annual plan — as CJRLC members met at the Battleground Country Club on May 24 for the Spring Membership Meeting.

And there was the special, too. Over twenty members completed CJRLC’s first Tech Challenge and were awarded CJRLC flash drives for their efforts by Roz. Then it was time to thank Roz for all she’s done for CJRLC and wish her well. And to wish a happy future to all the retirees in our membership.

In addition to hearing about Region highlights, Norma Blake unveiled NJSL’s new strategic plan, Pat Tumulty gave NJLA’s overview, and Leslie Burger spoke about her year as ALA President. The new Battleground renovation is lovely and old and new friends enjoyed meeting.

Summer Program

It’s a CJRLC tradition! This year we’ll have a half-day program at Battleground Country Club on Wednesday, July 11th. Choose between two speakers and stay for lunch too! Coffee and registration 9:00-9:30, lunch at 12:30; cost $30.00

Those of you who have heard Bob Dornish before know the enthusiasm and knowledge he brings to his presentations. You’ll hear about and see the best new and forthcoming children’s books.

In the workshop led by Joanne Roukens on Valuing Libraries, you will learn how to put a dollar amount on your library’s services. Let your administration, Board, and parents know the true value of your school library in a way that really makes a splash.

Database Discounts ‘08

Many of the discounts for the coming fiscal year are posted — you can find them by clicking on the “Discounts” tab on our website. Negotiated for all of the regions by INFOLINK, these discounts can save your library money!

CJRLC, with the other Regions and the State Library, will continue to pay for the EBSCO databases. Additional EBSCO databases have been added — Science Reference Center, History Reference Center, Literary Reference Center and several others. They will be available to you July 1st.

Once again, CJRLC is subsidizing Wilson’s Biography Plus Illustrated (the full text of articles and 26,000 images from 100 of their publications). Public, academic, and high school libraries pay $400 per site to a maximum of $2200 per system. K-8 schools pay $200! Send PO’s to CJRLC.

Facts on File and AP PhotoArchive will not be available for free.

School Group
Honors Linda
Greenwood and
Barbara Ruth

On June 5, the School Group will meet at 6:30 PM at Rooney’s in Long Branch to honor the retirement of Linda Greenwood and Barbara Ruth, long-time members. Linda is retiring from Manchester Township HS and Barbara from Hooper Avenue School in Toms River.

The need to learn and teach computer technology was the driving force that brought the group together in the early days and they have never stopped learning and teaching!

    Zarita Mattox Receives
NAACP Community
Service Award

Ocean County Librarian Zarita Mattox was honored on April 29 by the Toms River Branch of NAACP for her work as a community leader. A graduate of the NJ Academy of Library Leadership, Zarita demonstrates her commitment to libraries and her community in a variety of ways. Currently serving as Principal Librarian of Outreach and Branch Services at the Lakewood Branch of OCL, Zarita works with tutoring groups, and teenage parenting programs, among others. She has helped revitalize the Black Librarians Caucus for NJ and is active on the Professional Development Committee for NJLA.

Other community activities include directing a choir for Georgian Court University and numerous activities for her church where her husband Larry is Associate Pastor. Zarita is the mother of three children, Jonathan, Ebony, and Lauren. She loves photography and travel and combines those hobbies in photo exhibitions. Congratulations, Zarita!

ListenNJ and Next Reads

If you’re thinking about offering either of these services at your library, come to one of two information sessions in June. The first is on June 6th, at CJRLC, from 10-12. Learn about ListenNJ from 10-11; NextReads from 11-12. The program repeats on June 13th at INFOLINK.

You’ll hear about startup issues, costs, marketing, and how libraries are using these two excellent services. CJRLC will continue to provide financial support for these projects.

Memoir and Fiction:
How Close Are They?

Roz gave a talk at NJLA on one of her favorite Readers’ Advisory topics: the relationship between memoir and fiction. Below are some of her thoughts on this perennially popular genre.

When James Frey admitted that his wildly popular autobiography A Million Little Pieces was not entirely true, it created quite a stir. But many, if not all, memoirs contain some imaginatively re-created or fictional material. The late Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer said, “The full story of a person’s life could never be told; it would be either utterly boring or utterly unbelievable.”

If we were to write our own memoirs — and make them appealing — we’d have to use some of the techniques of fiction: a dramatic opening to catch the readers’ attention; memorable characters and events to carry the story; and of course a satisfying, insightful conclusion. Could we do that and promise we hadn’t stretched the truth or played fast and loose with our memories?

Maybe the best thing is to sit back and enjoy the ride and not peer too closely into the actual record. In many of the most popular memoirs, the author writes about early childhood. How much of what we remember comes from repeated telling of family stories or hazily remembered events? If we realize that we can’t truly believe every word of Angela’s Ashes, does that change our feelings about Frank McCourt’s literary accomplishment?

There are many memoirs that will provide the same pleasures as fiction. We can identify with the main character, become absorbed in a great story, and feel the satisfaction of a tale well told. Try Vivian Gornick’s classic Fierce Attachments, J.H. Moehringer’s The Tender Bar, Tobias Wolff’s This Boy’s Life, or Jill Ker Conway’s The Road From Coorain for starters.

I’d love to hear about memoirs that you’ve liked. Email me your favorites at roz@thereisners.net.

Program Coordinator's
Notes

Did you see the invitation on our listserv about the Library Camp at Baruch College in NYC on August 14? It’s an all-day free conference, actually it’s an “unconference.” The participants decide on the spot what will be discussed; a facilitator helps set up discussion groups for the day and keeps things moving along. The stated focus will be finding solutions to common problems and issues. Find out more about it at: http://librarycampnyc.
wikispaces.com/
.

What a thought! The attendees decide what the conference is all about! Well, um, isn’t that really what CJRLC does all the time? We give you an opportunity to tell us what you need to learn and then we provide workshops and networking so you can discuss and learn from your colleagues. Let us know what you’re interested in... it’s Library Camp here every day!

Tech
Challenge
Update

It has been such fun to see 40+ people sign up for the Tech Challenge! As of this writing, more than 20 people have finished, and many others have promised to keep working through the summer.

Here’s a sample of the comments I’ve heard:

     “I really did enjoy myself.”
“Thanks for putting us up to the challenge.”
“I am really so much better off for having done the Challenge.”
“The Tech Challenge was thought provoking and fun too.”
“I’ve shared the Tech Challenge with my family at home. My husband now has his own blog.”

Heard at various meetings around the state:
From Stephen Abram: “When we study something to death, we have to remember that death was not the original goal.”
Quoted by Ray Kurzweil in his book The Art of Spiritual Machines: “The universe is made of stories, not of atoms.”  Muriel Rukeyser.
From Joan Frey Williams: “Convenience trumps quality.”
From Dave Genesy: “Give people what they want.”

Wendy
Simon is
New
Lay Rep
on CJRLC
Board

Wendy Simon, our new lay representative, was born and raised in New York City.  Wendy’s first job was on the staff of Motor Boating Magazine.  She followed this with a job at the Sheraton Hotels as Assistant to the Banquet Manager.

During this time she married her childhood sweetheart, Jerry (they’re still happily married!).  After a two-year stint in Cleveland, where their children were born, they returned to New Jersey, where they’ve been ever since.

Wendy accepted a position at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital,

where she worked for twenty years in various departments.  Her last and most favorite job there was Food Services Supervisor.

When Marlboro closed, she joined the staff at the New Jersey Training School for Boys as Assistant Regional Food Service Director.  In that capacity, she oversaw an operation that fed three juvenile correctional facilities.  After five years of service, she retired.

Currently she is a volunteer guide at the Monmouth County Historical Association in Freehold.

Last year, Wendy and her husband moved to an adult community.  Her favorite pastime is spending time with her granddaughter, Rachel.  But she is also enjoying cooking, baking, walking, traveling, and the freedom of setting her own schedule.

Welcome to the Board, Wendy!
