ALA President
Leslie Burger
Spring Membership
May 24, 2007
|
So What is
it Really Like to be ALA President?
Leslie Burger, Director of the Princeton Public Library, and
former director of CJRLC, will come home to the CJRLC Spring
Membership Meeting to tell us about her year as ALA President.
What has she learned? What was surprising? How do you make an
impact with a one year term? What does she hope to still
accomplish in her last few weeks? What is planned for ALA Annual
in DC in June? She’ll answer your questions, too.
Plan now to attend. The date is Wednesday, May 24, 3:30-5:30, at
the newly renovated Battleground Country Club, 40 Millhurst Road
in Manalapan. |

Tech Challenge Update
CJRLC is
offering this challenge to all library staff members to expand their
technological prowess by learning about Web 2.0. Do all 6 things on the
Challenge and we’ll reward you at our membership meeting, May 24th. Do
any part of the challenge and you’ll still be recognized for your
efforts! As part of the Challenge, you’ll set up a blog, learn to use
Flickr, RSS feeds, and more.
You can
do the program totally on your own schedule. We’ve also arranged
several workshops to help you along -- see p.3. There are resources on
our website.
We have
20 fearless participants. Call or email Roz to join them!

SchoolGroup Open House
We’ve
chosen an interesting location and speaker for the annual Spring Open
House. The library in the West Long Branch School District serves 2
schools and is the physical bridge between them. Librarian Angel Somers
will tell us how that works.
Then,
Steve Garwood, from Rutgers SCILS, will talk about tactics for
plagiarism prevention. Join us at Frank Antonides School from 3:30-4:30
for refreshments and tour; Steve’s talk is 4:30-5:30. See the flyer
on our website for more information and a link to directions.

Letters to Laura
Forty-three people have had their lives directly changed by two IMLS
grants from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program through
IMLS, the Institute of Museum and Library Services. They have received
or will receive tuition to help reach the next stage of their education.
CJRLC is one of five partners in the grant. Connie Paul has been
gathering letters from them to the First Lady to thank her for promoting
the scholarship program and to let her know the impact of the program on
their lives.
All of
the AA, BA, and MLIS grant recipients work in NJ urban public libraries.
The theme of their letters is “Without your grant, I could never have
done this”. Linda Keane got her MLIS degree from Rutgers SCILS in the
first grant, 2003-2006. She is now working as the first children’s
librarian Asbury Park PL has had in 30 years. “My goal is to reach as
many children as possible and bring to them my love of reading.” she
wrote.
Tonya
Badillo from Long Branch PL is one of four grant recipients who
completed a BA degree in round one, and who will have the opportunity to
get an MLIS degree in the new grant, 2006-2009. As the first college
graduate in her family, Tonya has great plans after receiving her MLIS
degree. She wants to “expand ESOL programs, work diligently to close
the digital divide and continue to reach out to urban youth so that they
no longer are overwhelmed by the size of our doors, but feel empowered
and welcomed to walk through them.”
Malakia
Oglesby, Asbury Park PL, goes for the big picture: Urban public
libraries, she writes, “understand our mission, our jobs as the
quintessential information portals of the world, and I’d like to give
a heartfelt thanks to you for understanding it too.”

Phyllis’s and
Everyone’s Favorites
Phyllis’s
Websites have been a staple in our newsletter since 1999. We often hear
comments from librarians about how much they appreciate them, but we
thought we’d find out more detail.
The
listserv message we posted received some wonderful responses. Phyllis’
recommendations wend their way around the globe, connecting friends and
family members!
Kathy
Logue, at Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, stays connected to a
niece in California by sending her links. “I’ve sent her on ‘trips’
to Africa and Egypt as well as Philadelphia and to wild animal sites all
over the world. By keeping her informed of interesting sites
to check out, I’ve been spurring her interest to look outside of her
own neighborhood.”
Dorothy
Alibrando, at the NJ Dep. of Environmental Protection “can sometimes
find Websites that our research scientists could use either here or when
they are out speaking.”
Denise
Vodola, Wall MS, saves them in a separate folder for teachers; some
become the “site of the week” on her school Website. She forwards
others to her nieces and nephew in Germany, who “find many of the
sites helpful, not only for language and grammar, but for ‘games’
and classwork.”
Linda
Greenwood, at Manchester HS, writes: “I send them to our departments
and administrators. The teachers think I am wonderful since this saves
them time.”
You can
subscribe to a daily email of favorites from Phyllis at anker@hslc.org.
Her blog
is another place to check for good Websites. The blog started in
December 2004 and there are now 2,766 postings! Salutations and thanks
to Phyllis, our very own CJRLC search engine!

I’m
one of those people who hates cold weather, limited daylight, and
heavy winter clothing, so I endure February cheerfully only because it’s
short! March doesn’t always meet expectations, but at least we’re
headed the right way.
We’re
welcoming in brighter, warmer weather with a profusion of workshops
and get-togethers.
Whether
you’re taking the Tech Challenge or not, you may want to sign up for
our blogging
workshop on March 21st at Princeton, with Janie Hermann, from
2:30-5:30.
Learn
how to use Flickr, that nifty photo sharing, storing, and
searching site, on March 27th at the CJRLC lab, from 2:00-5:00. Our
instructor is Elizabeth Burns, from Ocean County Library.
The
third technical workshop, on setting
up and using RSS feeds, is on April 10th, at CJRLC, taught by
Jessica Adler, from 3:00-5:00.
Each of
the above workshops is $20.00 and each has limited space, so sign up
soon.
The TechGroup
is meeting on March 20th for a program
on gaming. Learn about the huge world of games and what
libraries can do to attract gamers to the library. Tyler Rousseau,
from Ocean County Library, will present at CJRLC. It’s free, but
RSVP to CJRLC so we can plan for refreshments.
The Monmouth
Librarians Association will have an Open
House on March 29th at the new Ocean Township Branch of
Monmouth County Library Come see the delightful
library-as-beach-house architecture and network with colleagues. RSVP
to CJRLC.

Getting to
Know
David Lisa
|
David
Lisa, director of the West Long Branch PL, is the co-chair of CJRLC’s
TechGroup committee, an avid fan of technology, and a NJ native.
David
found his way into Library Science through work-study jobs in the
libraries at the University of Miami and Kent State University during
undergraduate and graduate work in radio broadcasting and journalism.
After a stint as supervisor of circulation at Kent State, he began a MLS
program there and completed his degree at Clarion University in
Pennsylvania.
His next
position was at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA, as head of Access
Services. When he saw a posting for a reference position at the public
library in Wayne, NJ, he felt that would combine his desire to return to
NJ and branch out into reference work and Web design.
|
In
2002, after several years in Wayne, he applied for the director
position at the West Long Branch PL and moved to Monmouth County. At
West Long Branch, David has been able to use his technical skills and
outside interests to enrich the library.
As a
fan of technology, David has encouraged all of his staff members to
learn about and use technology as much as they can. His Web design
skills are evident in the West Long Branch Website cum blog: www.wlbpl.org.
Because
of his lifelong interest in comics and graphic novels, he has
established collections of these media at WLBPL to attract new
patrons.
David’s
interest in gaming (he’s a World of Warcraft fan), dictated the
topic of the next TechGroup meeting at CJRLC on libraries and gaming.
Come to
the meeting on March
20th and meet David Lisa!
