Kathleen
Carr will take a position with Ancora Hospital. This will also mean that
she will no longer be serving on CJRLC’s Executive Board. Kathleen has

will be missed in the library community.

Media
Specialist Jim Shearer had surprises for attendees at the Open House at
his new media center: free books! A corporate donor had given Jim
thousands of books, and he shared the leftovers with his guests. So it
was a welcome payback when Jim’s school won the visit by Patrick Jones
in a drawing. All the schools which entered the drawing received a copy
of Patrick’s two novels as a gift from CJRLC. Patrick will visit Jim’s
school and meet with students on December 4 before he speaks at the
CJRLC Fall Membership Meeting in Toms River.
Bonnie
Kunzel was the guest speaker for the day on the best Science Fiction and
Fantasy novels. We will miss Bonnie when she moves to Memphis later this
month!

NJALL06
Leadership Academy

Twenty-five enthusiastic library leaders met at the Rutgers U Inn and
Conference Center October 15-19 to participate in a leadership journey.
Funded by LSTA through a grant from the New Jersey State Library, this
is the fourth leadership program for NJ’s mid-career librarians.
The
program was organized by Connie Paul and facilitated by Maureen
Sullivan. There were also programs by Norma Blake, NJ State Librarian;
Karen Hyman, SJRLC Director; Joanne Roukens, HRLC Director; Carolyn Ryan
Reed, East Orange PL Director; and Trevor Dawes, Princeton U. Dr. Jana
Varlejs, SCILS, also attended to introduce an evaluation of the program
she is doing for a paper at IFLA.
Attendees
were from all four regions, and all types of libraries. They were
diverse in many aspects, but not gender. For the first time, attendees
were all female! Three of the attendees were from Delaware -- a
cooperative agreement with their state library.
Topics
covered included traits of a leader, risk-taking, managing differences,
ethics, politics, power and influence, community involvement, and career
planning, among others. A leadership inventory by Kouzes and Posner was
one of the activities. For the reading list recommended by Maureen
Sullivan, go to www.cjrlc.org/Links/
leadershipreadinglist.htm.
From
attendees: “NJALL went beyond my expectations. So much to assimilate
immediately!” and “Wonderfully thought out and executed. The guests
speakers alone were worth the price of admission.” “Wonderful
networking! Wonderful presentations and presenters! “
The next
academy is scheduled for 2007/2008.

Leslie’s
Emerging
Leaders Program is
Underway
When
Leslie Burger became ALA president in June, 2006, she announced six
initiatives. One of them was an Emerging Leaders program to revitalize
ALA leadership the way NJ’s program has done for NJLA. She asked
Connie Paul and Maureen Sullivan to coordinate that initiative and it
will take place beginning on January 19, just before the ALA Midwinter
in Seattle. It will conclude six months later in June at ALA Annual in
Washington, DC. In the interval, groups will work virtually on a
project.
One
hundred librarians with fewer than five years in the profession were
selected to participate. Half the group were selected by ALA Divisions,
Committees, and Chapters. The other half were chosen from 300+
applicants. Applicants came from 44 states, Washington DC, and two
foreign countries. They represented all types of libraries but the
majority were from academic and public libraries. A committee of eight
librarians from around the country selected the finalists from a pool of
outstanding, mostly young librarians.
As with
the NJLA program, attendees agreed to serve on an ALA committee or task
force in the year following their program. The number of applicants
attests to the program’s popularity, and ALA Executive Director Keith
Fiels has announced his intention of repeating the program next year.
Two NJ librarians were sponsored: Karen Klapperstuck, Bradley Beach PL
Director, by NJLA; and Carolyn Wood, West Deptford PL, by the Library
Network.

I’ve
always been interested in the publishing world, with its feverish
promotions and large egos. Of course, for librarians, it’s important
to go beyond the hype to monitor trends, authors, genres, etc. For
keeping up, I recommend subscribing to Media Bistro’s free Daily
Media News Feed, which covers news of the publishing and
communication world. Just go to www.mediabistro.com.
Another
interesting free daily email is Publishers Lunch, an informal
look at who’s doing what in the publishing community. You can sign
up at www.caderbooks.com.
But I have to warn you -- they’re addictive!
Don’t
forget about the workshops we have scheduled this month -- especially
the blogging classes. We’re hoping to help as many libraries
as possible set up blogs and market their services in this neat and
easy way. It’s great for schools! We have two hands-on classes
scheduled: November 14th at Princeton PL from 3-6 pm and November 15th
at CJRLC from 9:30-12:30. We promise you will come away from these
workshops with a working blog.
Talking
about blogs, take a look at the TechGroup’s Blog, set up and
maintained by co-chairs David Lisa and Krista Wittenberg. It will
certainly give you ideas for your own blog. It’s at: http://cjrlctech.blogspot.com/
or you can get to it from the Committees
page on our website.
We’ve
scheduled a Book Repair Workshop with Kim Avagliano for 3-6 pm
on December 14th to accommodate all those who find the earlier times
difficult. It’s a great way to stretch your budget. The $35 cost
includes a kit of repair materials. Call the office to register.

Getting to
Know
Amy Clark
|
 |
Amy
Clark, from Brookdale Community College, is the new chairperson for
CJRLC’s Academic Reference Librarians Committee, a lively group which
meets several times each year for discussions, networking, and programs.
Amy came
to librarianship after teaching high school English at Point Pleasant
Borough High School, her alma mater. She always wanted a career that
involved empowering people through the transfer of knowledge, and
librarianship seemed like just the right choice.
After
completing her MLS at Rutgers, she worked for a time at Ocean County
Library’s Brick Branch,
|
but her real interest was
a position at an academic library. This is her second year at
Brookdale. Librarians at Brookdale work with the academic departments
for collection development, and Amy is lucky to work with the Business
Department faculty in the areas of fashion, culinary arts, management,
and marketing. She’s also teaching a section of the basic research
and writing class at Brookdale as an adjunct faculty member.
Amy is
participating in this year’s Emerging Leaders program through NJLA
and is looking forward to the opportunities it provides for
networking, picking up new skills and ideas, and becoming more
involved in the profession.
An avid
reader and vegetarian cook, Amy has recently taken up surfing -- an
ideal Jersey Shore interest. We’re delighted to have Amy as an
active Region member!
