A
coalition which includes CJRLC received one million dollars to continue

will allow 23 current employees of NJ urban public libraries to pursue
their education toward an MLIS degree. Five will work on an AA degree
from Thomas Edison State College; eight will work on a BA degree. Ten
students will begin an MLIS program at Rutgers SCILS next fall and one
will begin a PhD program there.
A series
of open houses will be held at public libraries around the state to give
more information. Come at 10 AM on 9/7 to Newark PL; 9/11 to
Trenton PL; 9/12 to Long Branch PL; and 9/20 to
Hammonton PL. RSVP to host library.
For more
information, see our website, www.cjrlc.org and look in the Spotlight.
The NJ State Library will administer the grant. NJLA, Rutgers SCILS, and
TESC are also partners.

promotional materials you would find most useful. SJRLC has given us
permission to use their door and window decals and we will distribute
them. If you have public wireless, come, whether you got it through us
or not. RSVP to INFOLINK (732-752-7720) and say if you want lunch at
noon before the meeting.

Join Our
Project in
Year Two |
ListenNJ
had a banner first year providing downloadable audio books to library
customers. If you were waiting to see if it would work, now you know it
does, so join us for Year Two beginning January 1, 2007.
Year One
and Year Two participants from CJRLC and INFOLINK will be meeting on
September 6 at 10 AM to noon at Monroe Twp. Public Library. RSVP to
INFOLINK (732-752-7720) if you plan to attend and indicate whether we
should order lunch for you. We will be reviewing policies and procedures
and ordering promotional materials. If you didn’t attend an
information session (or even if you did) and you need help to decide
whether to join, speak to Roz or Connie. We love this project!

Report from CJRLC
Communications
Planning Day
August 23rd at Princeton PL
The
Social Web? Web 2.0? Wikis, blogs, and RSS? Is this how we should be
communicating? Should one or more be adopted by CJRLC now?
On August
23 the Executive Board invited committee members and others to explore
our region’s goals and how we plan to meet them in the next three
years. To help us with the new possibilities for communicating, we
invited three tech gurus to inform our discussion: Board member Robert
Lackie from Rider Univ.; Janie Hermann from Princeton PL; and Sophie
Brookover, from Camden County Library.
Top
recommendations to follow up on: creations of subdomains for each
committee so each has a web presence; blogs for each committee for their
own work and to facilitate cross-committee communication, research
scenarios for virtual meetings, and training for libraries to set up
their own blogs and RSS feeds.
The Board
will be considering the recommendations and a committee will begin work
on implementation. The Tech Group already started: See their blog at: http://cjrlctech.
blogspot.com.
Youth Services
Forum

name just a few.
Come at 9
and stay ‘til 3 at Monmouth Co. Lib HQ in Manalapan. Flyers with
registration will be in the mail and on the NJ State Library website.
NJLA members pay $25; others pay $37.50.

Notes |

I hope
you had a lovely summer and survived those days of sweltering heat we
had in August! We have a full schedule of workshops and events this
fall; some are repeats of old favorites, some are new. We try to
listen to your requests for topics, times, and locations!
Mental
Health Issues and Library Patrons, a workshop that will help you
distinguish between challenging behaviors and serious mental health
conditions will be held on Thurs., Sept. 28th at Princeton PL from
9:30-12:30. The presenter is Debbie Kinney-Chen, from the Mental
Health Association in NJ. The cost is $20.00; “coffee and” will
start at 9:00. Call the office to register.
On Oct.
5, join Kim Avagliano, from Monmouth Co. Library, to learn how to
repair your worn and torn books. This popular hands-on Book Repair
Workshop, is fun, practical, and will save you far more than the
$35.00 registration fee (which includes a take-home kit of supplies).
The time is 10:00-1:00; the place is Monmouth Co. Lib HQ in Manalapan.
Call the office to register.
Don’t
forget about HouseCalls! I’ll be glad to visit your library at your
convenience to help you make the best use of the free databases. If
you have technical or access issues, I’ll talk to your technology
coordinator. If I’ve already visited your library, but you need a
refresher, staff has changed, or whatever — I’ll come back! Don’t
hesitate to call or email me; I love to visit member libraries.
And...
don’t forget about the Committee meetings coming up this fall.
InfoLit meets Sept. 18th at CJRLC, from 4-5:30pm. CJILL meets Oct. 3rd
at Monmouth Univ. from 10-12.

Patrick Jones Coming to NJ!
And Maybe to Your
Library???
|
Most of
us serve teens, or think we should, or wonder why we don’t. Author of Connecting
with Reluctant Readers (Neal Shuman, 2006) and two novels for teens,
Nailed and Things Change, Patrick Jones is perhaps the
best known speaker about teens and libraries in the US.
And in
December he is coming to New Jersey, where he will be the featured
speaker at three regional Fall Membership meetings, including CJRLC’s.
On Monday, December 4, Patrick will be our guest at our Fall Membership
Meeting at the wonderful new Toms River branch of the Ocean County
|
Library.
(He will be speaking to SJRLC on Tuesday and INFOLINK on Wednesday of
that week.) In addition to speaking to our membership, Patrick would
like to do a school visit while he is here.
CJRLC will be holding a drawing for a free visit by Patrick Jones
to one or more small groups of students in your library and we will be
providing 10 copies of each of his novels to that library to share with
attendees! Academic, school and public libraries (who could host a teen
group during the day on December 4) are welcome to apply. The drawing
will be at the SchoolGroup Open House at the new Robbinsville HS on
Tuesday, September 26, 4-6 PM.
You must be present to win, so sign up now to say that you want
Patrick Jones to visit your library. Send a fax (732-409-6492) or email
to connie@cjrlc.org.
