Mary Ellen Bates Speaker at May 24th* Membership Meeting |
 |
The speaker and the location are the same; only the date has changed
(by one day). CJRLC’s Spring Membership Meeting at the beautiful new
TCNJ Library in Ewing is now May 24th.
Moving our date to Wednesday
allows our members to hear Mary Ellen do two programs and have a nice
dinner as well, if they choose to stay for the evening with the
Princeton Trenton chapter of SLA.
So here is the schedule for the whole day and you can do any or all
of it.
2:30 Tour the new library!
3:30 Reception and networking
4:00
CJRLC state/region update
4:35 Top 40 tech tips from Mary
Ellen Bates
Princeton Trenton SLA program
6:00 Neworking
6:30 Dinner ($22/non-members)
7:30 Mary Ellen
Bates on Proving
the Value of Your Library
All CJRLC and all SLA members are welcome to attend both
events. Invitations (with rsvp's) will be coming soon.
Lots of Tech Classes
Coming to Your Door!
Watch for flyers in this mailing and notices on the web about new
training opportunities that you can do on your own time. The
opportunities range from Microsoft Office through The Joy of Code
(web
design with XHTML and CSS) and cover much of the ground in-between. The
courses will be taken on-line and you can start at your convenience. They
will also be subsidized by CJRLC. Watch for the list!

Succession Planning
May 3 and 4
Vincentian Center
So many NJ library directors and assistant directors will be retiring
in the next few years (or could). Will you know when the time is right?
Will your library be ready? Do you have a succession plan? Is picking
your successor a good idea?
Preparing Your Organization for Transition is a 24 hour program held
over two days to give some time for reflection and thought. The session
last summer got rave reviews from participants. It will again be led by
Barbara Miller and Troy Chapman of the Support Center for NonProfits and
it will be held on May 3 and 4 at the Vincentian Center in Plainsboro.
Answer: “How can you help your organization prepare for change?” by
attending this great program.
The cost is only $60 and includes one night’s lodging, breakfast
and lunch on Thursday. We will eat on our own in Princeton Wed. night.
Send PO or check to CJRLC.
Life Coaching
Are you an experienced librarian? Are you ready to learn a skill
which will help with people you supervise and help you in your own life,
too?
Life Coaching seeks to prepare experienced NJ librarians to coach
people in their own organizations and in the NJ library community. It
will consist of five days of training over five months. Led by Sandy
Newman with nationally known coaching trainers, the course will help
librarians personally and professionally. The course costs $50 and will
be held on May 5, June 2, July 12, September 6 and 20 at the Vincentian
Center in Plainsboro.

Susan Pike Remembers
How it Was
Director, Matawan Aberdeen PL
Reading
that we’ll be discussing the 2006-2009 Strategic Plan at the Spring
Membership Meeting made me think of my experience as a member of the
committee that developed Region V’s Long Range Strategic Plan 1993-1998. (We actually thought we could plan for five years back then.)
In 1991, library service in the Region was very uneven. Only the
largest libraries had automation systems. My library got our first
computer to participate in the OCLC Group Access project. Some school
libraries didn’t even have telephones. The Region was still new in May
of 1991, when Region Director Dottie Hiebing and Committee Chair Pat
Butcher brought together a group of 15 librarians to figure out ”why
does the Region exist and what do we want to accomplish?”
With Barbara Miller from the Support Center as our guide, committee
members crowded into the meeting room at the Schank Road office to hash
out a purpose statement and a mission statement. The discussions were
intense. I always left those meetings wanting to drive fast with the
windows open and the radio blasting.
After several meetings we all agreed that “the purpose of Region V
is to strengthen member libraries’ ability to meet patrons’ needs.”
From there we developed a mission statement and a vision. These
statements were further developed and refined through meetings with the
membership and the Executive Board. One meeting was held at The Cabin in
July. We were coached on being facilitators (avoid process battles,
remind people of meeting ground rules) and recorders (write legibly
using varying colors, number all sheets). It sticks in my mind how good
Joyce Smothers was at writing on the flipcharts. I always had trouble
switching colors.
The next step was the program review. The list of strong programs
will
sound familiar: Comet Delivery Service, Children’s Book Evaluation,
Continuing Education, and OCLC Group Access Capability Project (part of
the Region’s ILL component).

That was the easy part. Working through the other programs to come up
with priorities was hard. New librarians will laugh at the other
programs that needed to be examined further.
1. Technology – we knew this
was part of our future but a strategy to keep current needed to be
developed.
2. Cooperative video service
3. Walk-in reference – a State
mandated service that was a problem from the beginning
4. Enhanced
reference
5. Supplemental reference
6. Net Lender Reimbursement
These were discussed and discussed - sometimes calmly, sometimes with
much gnashing of teeth. Fortunately we had a great tool, the MacMillan
Matrix, for deciding what the Region should do. Seed money for special
projects became a program priority in the 1993-1998 plan as a way to
keep us moving toward the future. I’m happy to see that this concept
has become a part of our Region culture. Certainly support for current
projects like ListenNJ and the wireless project had their roots in the
work done so long ago.
Thanks, Susan!

SchoolGroup Open House, May 2 |
Join the SchoolGroup for its
traditional spring Open House, this year at Long Branch MS from
3:30-5:30. LBMS just opened its new building in December. The school has
three “academies,” each on a separate floor. Each academy has a
different academic focus, with three different sets of staff - principals,
guidance counselors, etc., but there’s only one library!
Librarian Sandy Rendish will provide a tour of this lovely new space.
There will be time for refreshments and networking and learning about
what’s happening in the Region and around the State from Connie and
Roz.

Coordinator’s Notes

I’ve been surprised to find there are still some libraries not
using the free databases. Maybe we shouldn’t refer to them as “free,”
since that term often means something of little value. These are
high-quality, high-end databases paid for by the Regions, NJ State
Library, and NJKI in a wonderful program that gives everyone in New
Jersey the same access to information from any type of library and
from home.
In addition, CJRLC offers help
-- that’s our HouseCalls service.
I’ll come visit you with my “black bag” and help you set up and
use the databases. I’ll even do in-service workshops for free. Just
email me at roz@cjrlc.org and I’ll gladly come. It’s the best part
of my job.
Did you know that EBSCO is providing free access to Library,
Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) to all
libraries? LISTA indexes over 600 periodicals, plus books, research
reports, and proceedings back to the mid-1960s. You can bookmark it at
www.libraryresearch.com and add it to your EBSCO profile, so it
comes up as a choice along with EBSCOhost Web, Student Research
Center, etc. Email our rep, Julie Princi and she will add it for you: jprinci@epnet.com.
We had 2 workshops in early March on customizing EBSCO with Admin.
If you missed them, let me know and I’ll help you customize your
EBSCO interface. Did you know you can link directly to the individual
EBSCO databases?
Have you noticed that because of the NJ Knowledge Initiative, we
all now have access to Academic Search Premier and Business Source
Premier? You’ll find them at the bottom of the list of databases in
EBSCOhost web. You can move them up in the list, but you need to know
how to use Admin... call me if you need help!

Getting
to Know...
Katherine Durante
Kathy, CJRLC’s new lay representative on the Board, comes from the
OceanFirst Foundation in Toms River. Ocean First Bank set up the
Foundation when it converted from a thrift institution to a stock-owned
company 10 years ago. It was the first bank anywhere to create a
charitable foundation. Kathy has been the director for the past 2 years.
Last year, the Foundation, for the first time, offered 10 grants of
$25,000 to school libraries in Ocean, Monmouth and part of Middlesex
Counties. This wonderful opportunity is being repeated this year, with
an April 1st application deadline. These grants fit in with the
Foundation’s charter to provide funding in four areas: housing; youth
development; health and wellness; and quality of life improvement.
|
OceanFirst’s grants have caused more excitement in school media
centers than any program in a long time! Over 130 schools applied, and
each school who attended the lovely reception was given a gift of $250
for books. Kathy promises more surprises this year. What fun!
Kathy believes she has the perfect job
-- “I get to make people
happy,” she says. She spent her undergraduate years at Rutgers and
graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. Before working for the
Foundation, she was the executive director of the United Way of Ocean
County. She lives in Toms River and finds her out-of-work hours happily
occupied with her two small children.
She is delighted to be a CJRLC Board member as it gives her an
opportunity to learn more about the needs of school libraries. We are
sure that the learning will be on both sides -- welcome to the Board,
Kathy!
