Literacy @ your
library®
Wednesday, June 15, 2005
NJLA and
the NJ State Library are sponsoring a forum on Literacy at the Monmouth
County Library Headquarters 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan. The New Jersey
State Library will donate an Every Child Ready to Read kit to the
first 100 libraries agreeing to conduct an early literacy program using
this format. These kits (worth $300) were purchased with funds donated
by Verizon Pioneers.

Programming will be offered for both administrators and practitioners.
Geared toward the practical, sessions will feature information on
starting literacy programs and also on taking the next steps in child
and adult literacy. The cost for the day for NJLA members is $40
(non-members $60) and registration forms are found on the NJLA website.
There are discounts for multiple attendees from one library. The
registration deadline is June 8.
Monmouth Librarian’s
Luncheon
This
annual event, complete with ocean view, is June 30th at Merri-Makers in
Sea Bright from 11:30-2:30. The speaker is Roz Reisner, author of Jewish
American Literature: A Guide to Reading Interests. Members and
non-members are welcome! If you need the flyer, print it from our web
site, circle your menu choice, and send it with a check
($22/members, $26/non-members) to Sheila Watson at Avon PL.

Super
Summer Programs |
Call the
office to register for our two wonderful summer programs!
First is Super Summer Seminar, July 22 at Monmouth
Co. Lib. HQ in Manalapan. Drs. Carol Kuhlthau and Ross Todd from Rutgers
SCILS will speak about the impact of school libraries on student
learning, Bonnie Kunzel will talk about the latest award-winning books
for children and teens, and Robert Lackie will present the five best
Internet sites for K-12. The program runs from 9:30-3:00 and the $35.00
fee includes lunch.
On July 28, we’ve arranged a trip to Dr. Robert
Dornish’s house in Bethlehem, PA to see his collection of original art
from children’s books. Dr. Dornish will also talk about the best new
and forthcoming children’s books. Those who heard Dr. Dornish speak
last summer will remember his entertaining and enthusiastic
presentation. The cost is $45.00 (lunch on your own). The bus leaves
from CJRLC at 8 AM.

week program of storytelling by bilingual storytellers.
Libraries will choose their target language, hire a

grants are up to $2000 per library. See our web
site for more details.

Good news! The four Regional Library
Cooperatives have renewed our delivery contract
with CD&L for 2006. It is renewable for two more years
with satisfactory service. Let the office know if you have any problems.
For most libraries, delivery seems to be going well.

Audio and E-Book
News
What’s
next for E-Books and audio books? We are planning a trial of Overdrive
ebooks and audio books in the summer.

Overdrive
features popular books which can be downloaded either as ebooks or as
audio books and checked out from participating libraries. It features
fast downloads and audiobooks can be burned to CDs in addition to MP3
players and computers. This vendor will possibly supplement but will not
replace the existing contract with netLibrary. Currently twelve CJRLC
and Infolink libraries have agreed to renew our netLibrary contract for
3500 ebooks, all non-fiction.
A webinar
will be set up in June to demonstrate the features of Overdrive to
interested libraries. If you would like to take part, call or email
Carol and asked to be notified about the date and time. We are excited
about the possibilities!
Put the
JerseyClicks Logo on Your Home Page!

Your
patrons will want access to Ref USA, a new database on
JerseyClicks made possible by the Knowledge Initiative (see September’s
CJRLC Update for more info on NJKI).
Fortunately it’s easy to use, and SJRLC will show you how at this link.
Thanks, SJRLC!

The Board
voted to subsidize Accunet/AP Photo Archive for another year, so
all CJRLC libraries will have free access to this great resource for
pictures, maps, charts, and now audio clips too. The Audio portion is
already turned on, and you can listen to clips from the Beatles first
performance on the Ed Sullivan show, Martin Luther King’s I Have a
Dream Speech, JFK’s inaugural address, and more. Just download
RealMedia Player.
If you
need help using any aspect of the PhotoArchive, call the office and I’ll
answer your questions on the phone or in person.
Meridian
Health and the NJ State Library are offering free “Health-e
Learning” workshops to help library staff teach seniors how to use
the Internet for their health care information needs. Participants will
learn how to use 3 excellent government Web sites: MedlinePlus, PubMed,
and Clinical Trials. The two hour classes will be held between
July 12th and July 22 at Princeton PL, Ocean Co. Library -- Jackson
Branch, and at CJRLC. These are wonderful resources for medical
information that everyone should know how to use. For more information,
and to register, go to www.njstatelib.org.
Catch up
on preservation issues with the Princeton Preservation Group this
summer at two interesting meetings. June 6, from 4-6 PM at Alexander
Library, Rutgers, in the SSC Lecture Hall, 3 Rutgers graduate students
will present papers. RSVP to Tim
Corlis, PPG VP. July 11, at Monmouth Co. Lib. HQ in Manalapan, from
4-6 PM, Daniel Noonan will speak about the NJ Digital Highway project.
RSVP to Shelagh Reilly.
All PPG meetings are free and open to everyone. |

Preparing Your
Library for Transition:
Planned or Unplanned
September 27-28, 2005
Vincentian Renewal Center
Part of
a leader’s job is to prepare his/her organization for a change in
leadership. Don Crocker and Barbara Miller of the Support Center for
Non-profits will lead a short retreat at the Vincentian Center in
Plainsboro on September 27 and 28, 2005, to help us think through the
process.
The
program is part of the leadership training series planned by CJRLC and
supported by the New Jersey State Library with state and federal LSTA
funding. We will gather at 1:00 PM on Tuesday and adjourn by 3:00 PM
on Wednesday. Lodging, breakfast and lunch on Wednesday are included
in the $60 fee. We will have dinner in Princeton on Tuesday night,
which is not included in the cost.
A
registration form will be on our website.
Highlights from
CJRLC’s Membership Meeting
On May
25, CJRLC members gathered at the beautiful newly renovated Middletown
Township Public Library for our Spring Membership Meeting. Tours were
provided by the staff and Director Susan O’Neal welcomed us as she
told how the choices made during the renovation changed the way
Middletown provides services to its customers.
Renee
Swartz, Leslie Burger, and the OceanFirst Foundation were honored for
their support of libraries. CJRLC President Ingrid Bruck presented
highlights of our year and Treasurer Karen Topham explained the budget
which was passed. State Librarian Norma Blake gave a summary of the
State Library’s accomplishments, and NJLA Director Pat Tumulty
reviewed NJLA’s activities. Judi Tolchin, Monmouth County Library,
will provide pictures for the web site. Thanks, Judi!

Getting
to Know Karen Messick |
It’s
hard to say goodbye to someone who’s contributed so much to youth
services in New Jersey, but we’ll have to do just that when Karen
Messick retires from LBH at the end of June.
Karen
discovered library work when her husband was a Naval officer and she
worked at the base library. When he was at sea, working there inspired
her to go to library school at Drexel.
She was
inspired by her Drexel courses in children’s services and worked in
the children’s departments at several branches of the Philadelphia
Free Library, eventually working in collection development for children’s
services in the central library.
|
Karen
left the Free Library to move to bucolic Bucks County, where gardening
and raising chickens occupied her time for a while. An offer to
catalog Pearl S. Buck’s book collection brought her back into the
library world. This was followed by 13 years at Merck, where she
enjoyed the special library world until the advent of computers
reduced the amount of customer interaction.
She
began to look around, and found a job at the Library for the Blind and
Handicapped, first as coordinator for the 150 volunteers for the
Audiovision service. As a former speech and drama major, she felt
right at home. Since 1993, she’s happily been the head of Youth
Services at LBH, where she’s enjoyed helping connect children and
teens with literature while setting an example for Youth Services
librarians around NJ.
Good luck in your
retirement, Karen — we will miss you!
