Renee Swartz is sworn in by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to National Museum and Library Services Board

Renee Swartz to be Honored at CJRLC Membership Meeting

Renee Becker Swartz has been named to the National Museum and Library Services Board by President Bush, one of 20 members nationwide. We will celebrate this capping of her 38 years of service to the NJ library community on May 25.

Plan now to join fellow CJRLC members at our Spring Membership Meeting at the newly renovated Middletown Twp Public Library. Staff will offer tours of the greatly expanded facility, which features self-checkout, retail marketing displays, and eye-catching signage. Director Susan O’Neal will share some of what she learned in the two year process.

NJ State Librarian Norma Blake will provide updates on state activities. And, we hope, we will be celebrating the election of Leslie Burger as ALA president! (Don’t forget to ask your friends to vote when the ballot comes out in late March!)

Monmouth Librarians Open House

Join us at the Henry Poppick Library at Bayshore Community Hospital on Tuesday, April 5 between 2:30 and 4:30. All are welcome to network and learn what hospital libraries can do for you!

The 3 R's:
The Right to Read,
The Right to Learn,
The Right to Grow

NJLA’s Annual Conference is April 11-13 at the Ocean Place Hilton in Long Branch.

LJ Librarian of the Year Toni Garvey from Phoenix Public Library, and author Alice Hoffman are two of the keynotes at this year’s conference.

Four great pre-conferences will begin the festivities on Monday, April 11. A highlight of Tuesday is the Awards ceremony on Tuesday night, followed by the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Rutgers SCILS! All alumni are encouraged to attend.

Consultant Pat Wagner, a frequent NJ speaker and always enlightening and challenging, will be presenting three programs.

Details about all the options are at www.njla.org. Don’t forget to visit the vendors and the NJLA store!

School Group Open House April 20

Principal Janet Creech and Librarian Sue Brodsky invite you to visit the new West Freehold School library off of Rt. 537 in Freehold on Wednesday, April 20th between 3:30 and 5:30. Tours, networking, region updates, CE credit and refreshments make this a fun, easy way to keep up with what’s happening on the school scene.

The address is 100 Castronova Dr. Register at CJRLC and we will have your certificate ready.

On March 23rd, a group of Ocean County Media Specialists and public librarians met at Lanoka Harbor ES for EBSCO training, and networking. Over pizza we discussed reviving the Librarians Assoc. of Ocean Co., and set up a steering committee to collect ideas and plan the next meetings. If you have ideas for programs for the group, or you’d like to get involved, contact Linda Greenwood at lgreenwood@

Librarian’s Day in DC with Congressman Rush Holt

Seventeen intrepid library people took a chance on the weather and accepted Congressman Holt’s invitation to visit the Library of Congress on March 9.

Thanks to Aide Lauren LaRusso for setting up our lovely day!
IMLS staff talk to Danielle Kootman, Ocean County Librarian (center)
One group visited the Music Room and saw original compositions by Mozart, Brahms, Bach and Beethoven!

Mary Chute from IMLS talks to Roz Reisner, CJRLC

Congressman Owens, NY, is the only librarian in the House.
“This ties for the best professional day I’ve had — the other being Rush Holt’s Librarians Day five years ago!”

Nikki Frost, Indian Hill Elementary

We also heard from ALA’s Emily Sheketoff and IMLS’s Mary Chute and toured the Library of Congress.

“Our visit with Congressman Holt reinforced for me the importance of library friends in government and not to take for granted LSTA and eRate funding for libraries, which pays for the public computer services so valued by my library’s customers.
I intend to write my representatives — Congressman Holt and Senators Corzine and Lautenberg — and thank them for their library advocacy and ask for their continued support of NJ libraries!”

Ingrid Bruck, Long Branch Public Library

Report from School
Library Summit
March 18 and 19, 2005

School Library Journal invited 200 librarians, educators, and technologists to an event “designed to drastically change the course of the library media function for the betterment of K-12 education.” The summit was entitled Empowering Learners, Advancing the Profession and it had three tracks: Literacy, Student Achievement, and 21st Century Learning Skills. Each track identified key areas of concern and came up with action items.
New Jersey was well represented at the Summit. Among the most dynamic speakers was Dr. Paul Houston, Executive Director of the Am Assn of School Administrators. More about his speech next month.

Www.slj.com will be featuring reports from the Summit as well as next steps. The goal now is to keep the momentum going.

Program Coordinator’s Notes

Since last January, we’ve held 6 very successful reference skills workshops. Participants have repeatedly told us they want more. We’re listening! On May 17th and on June 9th, graduates of those 6 workshops can sign up for a Reference Skills Refresher and Database Workshop. In the morning, you’ll have a chance to practice the reference interview with Sue Kheel, learn tips for keeping up your skills, and see the new DVD about the model reference behaviors. After lunch (included in the $30.00 fee), Roz will provide hands-on database training in EBSCOhost and Facts on File. Call the CJRLC office.

To hear what’s new in the publishing world and network with publishers and colleagues, sign up for the free Day of Dialog on June 2nd sponsored by LJ and NYPL. For information, go to www.nypl.org/dialog. This popular event is always the day before BookExpo America.

The database discounts for next year are now posted on our Web site! Go to our home page and click on the “Discounts” tab. The free databases that we know and love remain the same. CJRLC has renewed Accunet/AP Photo Archive, and access to the Audio portion is added this year.
We still offer a great discount for Wilson Bios — every library saves more than $1000 on this very useful product. Now is the time to think about what you need for next year. Remember that vendors are often happy to arrange free trials.

The 2004-2005 Emerging Leaders graduated on March 3rd at Monroe Twp Library after enjoying 5 programs that helped them hone their leadership skills in such areas as identifying their leadership style, conducting meetings and giving presentations. Now they’ll each serve on an NJLA committee.

Getting to Know...
Melanie Yost

Melanie Yost, new CJRLC Executive Board member is the Media Specialist at Brick Twp. HS. She came to school library work through a Master’s degree in Educational Media and Technology from Boston University and began by teaching video production and photography in high school.

Before coming to Brick, she spent 7 years at West Windsor-Plainsboro School District where she was involved setting up libraries in several new schools — always a challenging experience! Looking for something to excite students about literature, she started a Fall Fest where she dressed up as Elvira the Witch and told stories to students all

day. She enjoyed the storytelling so much, she signed up for a storytelling course through Rutgers, and had a life-changing experience. Since then she’s become an avid storyteller, teaching storytelling as well as telling stories. She was featured on the cable program “In the Classroom” for her storytelling programs and has presented at the NJ Storytelling Festival in Stanhope.

Melanie still enjoys photography and hopes to do some video production again.

She is looking forward to serving on the CJRLC Executive Board for the opportunity it will give her to become more involved with the Region and strengthen her own knowledge of the profession.
