NJ’s Recruiting
Program To Be Featured at ALA Recruitment Assembly
January 14, Boston
Recognized as a national
model

It
started with CJRLC’s strategic plan and the determination of two board
members, Kathy Holden, Rider U., and Linda Greenwood, Manchester Twp.
HS. Region members thought we should “do something” about recruiting
for the profession. Faith Lundgren, Ocean County PL, and Laura Gruninger,
Mercer Co. PL, volunteered to help. They persuaded Connie Paul to make
it a region priority. With the active help of Karen Ellis, our
webmaster, we inaugurated the BecomeALibrarian
web site. PR consultant Tim Quinn helped design our brochures.
NJ State Librarian Norma Blake funded the program to
go statewide and has continued to fund the program through state and
LSTA funds.
Now recognized as a national model, (LJ editor
Michael Rogers called us the gold standard in recruiting!), NJ will be
one of four programs highlighted in the ALA Recruitment Forum on January
14 at ALA’s Boston Midwinter Conference.
Great Membership
Meeting!
Thanks to
June Schneider, Ocean Co. Library, Kim Bravo, speaking for Trenton PL,
and Ingrid Bruck, Long Branch PL, for sharing their enthusiasm about the
World Language StoryTelling program at our Membership Meeting on
November 18. Norma Blake, NJ State Librarian, and Rosalind Reisner were
also enlightening and entertaining

|
Candidate
for ALA President!
|
Check out
Leslie’s
website and be sure to vote for her for 2006 ALA President! Leslie
was a former director of CJRLC and the current director of Princeton PL.
Their new library building is a testament to Leslie’s vision,
perseverance, and ability to get things done.
Also testifying to Leslie’s competence, is the
award she just received as a NY Times Librarian of the Year. One of 27
winners around the country, Leslie received an award of $2500 and a
plaque at a reception on December 15.
If you wish to contribute to Leslie’s campaign for
ALA President, send a check to Linda Simon, PPL, 65 Witherspoon St.,
08542 and make the check to Burger Campaign. Go, Leslie!

Program
Planning with Monmouth Librarians
Just the
thing to cheer up a dreary February day — come to Monmouth Librarians’
February 16 workshop on how to run successful programs: “Blueprint for
Programming: How to Go From a Great Idea to a Well Attended Program.”
Programming experts Beth Miller and Flora Higgins will share their
expertise on how to plan, budget, and market your programs and how to
make the best use of audio and visual aids. Since that’s the week of
Valentine’s Day, a poetry program will be used as the example.
As an
added attraction, the workshop will be at the lovely, new expanded
Middletown Public Library (yes, there will be a tour).
This free
program will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 pm in the meeting room, with refreshments,
of course. RSVP to Roz Reisner at CJRLC (732-409-6484 or roz@cjrlc.org).

able to access the trial from our web
site starting on Jan. 3.
Web

quality, reviewed Web sites for schools and public libraries. For
information about Web Feet, go to: www.webfeetguides.com/.
Our trial is for their Core Collection.
LitFinder
offers access to full text of poetry, fiction, and drama as well
as literary criticism. For a description of LitFinder, go to www.cjrlc.org/Discounts/gale.htm
and click on Product Descriptions.

Program
Coordinator’s Notes |
I
recently joined an organization that you might find interesting — the
Women’s National Book Association. The WNBA was started in 1917 by 15
women booksellers who had been excluded from membership in the all-male
bookseller’s organizations. From the beginning, the group was open to
women in all facets of the book industry — including librarians — to
promote networking and education. New York was the founding chapter and
it’s still going strong with almost 200 members. (Men can now join
too.)
WNBA has
run seminars and in-service programs, participated in radio and TV
presentations, sponsored book and author events, and has been involved
in literacy projects. At a recent brunch that I attended, Jill Tardiff,
the president of the NY chapter (and the national president) asked if I
had any ideas about increasing the number of NJ members so that some
chapter activities and programs could be scheduled here. At that brunch
— my first WNBA event — I enjoyed meeting writers and people from
the NY publishing world and hearing about upcoming WNBA projects and
programs. On Jan. 28, WNBA is giving its annual achievement award to
librarian Nancy Pearl.
If you’d
like to learn more about the WNBA, take a look at the local
and national
chapter web sites.

TechGroup
Programs for January and February
Don’t
miss the next TechGroup programs! On Tuesday, January 11th, Edward Corrado,
the Library Systems Manager at Rider Univ. will present a program on
desktop security at 2:30 at CJRLC. Ed’s presentation will cover free
and for-pay tools that libraries can use to help maintain the
integrity of public access computers.
On February 8th, you’ll
have a chance to see RFID in action at Middletown Twp. PL. Middletown
opened their newly renovated and expanded library this fall with RFID
technology. The program is at 2:30 PM, at 55 New Monmouth Rd.,
Middletown (directions). All are welcome!
InfoLit Projects Update
“Cooperating
to Create Effective Researchers,” an InfoLit workshop, was presented
statewide at the EMAnj conference to an enthusiastic audience. Phyllis
Anker did the introductions; Dawn Popoff (Monmouth Univ), Roz Reisner
(CJRLC), and Lynne Pascale (Haddon Hts Middle and Senior High School)
gave the latest version of this workshop aimed at helping high school
media specialists and academic librarians collaborate to encourage the
teaching of information literacy skills at the high school level.
The
final Power Point presentation is now available to everyone to
customize and use in their schools. You can download
it from CJRLC’s web site.
InfoLit’s
other project, revision of the Help Pages, is moving right along. We’ve
updated links, added new sections, and generally re-structured the
pages to reflect changes in technology in the last 5 years. Check it
out! We’ll be asking for your feedback in a survey so we can fine
tune this helpful resource.

Getting to Know...
Sheila Goeke
Sheila
Goeke, new CJRLC Board Member, is the Technology Librarian at Stuart
Country Day School. Growing up in a large and busy household, libraries
offered a comfortable and tranquil place to read and learn. After
working in libraries during high school and college, she headed to
Rutgers for her MLIS.
Her first
job at the reference desk at Princeton PL seemed like the right place to
be, until someone mentioned an opening at Stuart, a small school with an
innovative history of women’s education. When she saw the library, she
was hooked on the idea of bringing it up to speed.
Never
having planned to work in a school, she learned on the job. She is very
grateful to CJRLC for our programs and networking in those early years.
Since 1991, she has overseen two renovations, an
|
expansion, and the
development of an active technology program. “Now it’s where we want
it to be — an integral part of the school.”
A few
years ago Sheila changed hats: she’s now the Technology Librarian.
This gives her a chance to train teachers in technology so they can
integrate it into their classroom activities and curriculum. She also
works with students, teaching them how to use programs in their research
and presentations. Sheila considers herself “an integrator and
trainer,” making sure that everyone makes the best use of
technological resources. She is a 2004 NJALL graduate.
Involvement with Stuart extends to her family: Sheila’s two daughters
have been students there, with the youngest currently in her junior
year. Sheila is looking forward to serving on the CJRLC Executive Board
and making her own contribution. Welcome, Sheila!
