InfoLit Program Goes to EMAnj Fall Conference!

Last winter, CJRLC’s InfoLit committee started a project to bring academic and high school librarians together to support the teaching of information literacy. Dawn Popoff (Monmouth U.) felt there was a natural partnership between these two groups; she encouraged the committee to develop a program to serve the needs of both.
In one of those happy accidents of chance, Roz learned that Ceil Freda, librarian at Middletown HS South, was interested in testing the program. Last April, Dawn, Barbara Herbert (Georgian Ct. U.), Karen Topham (Brookdale CC), Eleonora Dubicki (Monmouth U.), and Roz Reisner gave presentations to the Middletown South faculty and administrators about the research expectations their students would face as college freshmen and the importance of teaching a variety of research skills in high school. The sessions were short and to the point; the response was very positive.
The Power Point presentation was refined at other presentations in the Region. In the next step, Dawn, Roz, and Lynne Pascale, Media Specialist from Haddon Hts. will present the program at EMA on Friday, Dec. 3rd at 9:15 AM.. They will demonstrate how media specialists can partner with academic librarians in their communities and take this program home to their own districts.

Want to Know More About CJRLC?

Soon you will be able to learn all about CJRLC on your own desktop! We are working with videographer Tom Florek to produce a CD of CJRLC services. The project was the idea of Board Member John Woolf, and 20 CJRLC librarians are filmed or quoted in the CD.

Membership Meeting
November 18
Battleground Country Club

It’s been three years in the making, and at last — publication! CJRLC Program Coordinator Rosalind Reisner is the proud author of Jewish American Literature : A Guide to Reading Interests (Genreflecting Advisory Series, Libraries Unlimited). The book will be published at the beginning of November, just in time to be celebrated at the Fall Membership Meeting. Five lucky attendees will go home with an autographed copy!
The chance to hear Roz tell about her book is only one of the features of a full afternoon at Battleground County Club (directions on our website.) At 2:00 PM you have the opportunity to meet Jeff Kesper, the new Director of the Library Development Bureau of the NJ State Library. He and the other consultants of the Bureau will be talking about all of the programs and services offered by the NJSL, and they will be asking for your input, too.
At 3:30 it’s refreshments and a chance to talk to your fellow CJRLC members. Region news and business, and updates from NJLA and the State Library begin at 4:00 PM.
At 4:30 PM you will hear how you can sponsor a bilingual storytelling program in your library (well, maybe not every member library — but most!) and at 5:00 PM you will hear about Roz’s new book and get a chance to win your own copy! Sign up now by calling CJRLC, 732-409-6484, or email carol@cjrlc.org.

Hospital Library Honored

Jersey Shore Medical Center Booker Health Services Library is the winner of the US National Commission on Libraries and Information Science Award for a model consumer health program. The award was celebrated on September 29. Head Librarian Cathy Boss accepted the award presented by State Librarian Norma Blake and IMLS Commissioner Renee Swartz. Congratulations!

Program Coordinator’s Notes

Don’t forget to register for the free legal reference workshop “Is There a Law? on Wednesday, November 10th, at Howell Library presented by Leslie Witko and Thomas O’Malley from the NJ State Law Library. This is your chance to brush up on how to answer those tricky legal questions.

Bob Lackie will be back by popular demand on Wednesday, January 5th, at the Manalapan Library. We’ll have 2 afternoon sessions. From 12:30 - 3:00, it’s The Evolving Invisible Web and from 3:30 - 5:30, Sci-Math World from K-12. The cost is $20 for each workshop. More publicity will be in the mail shortly.

We’ve had many requests from librarians who want to try out Web Feet, so we’ve arranged a 6-week trial to begin in January. Watch for details about how to sign up. Web Feet is a subscription service that provides information about quality Web sites.

Those of you who were at the Youth Services Forum know what a great day it was for learning about new trends and programs. Registration was at 180 this year, so it’s not a secret! Ingrid Bruck, Kim Bravo, and June Schneider presented a terrific program on our World Language Storytelling project — you can catch them again at the Membership meeting on November 18th.

NJLA’s Emerging Leaders Begins Third Season

Sharon Karmazin and her Karma Foundation gave NJLA $2500 four or five years ago to start a leadership program. NJLA President Leslie Burger appointed Connie Paul to chair the committee to plan the program. That was year one.
Three years later, 31 beginning librarians will participate in the five day program to jump start their leadership training. The group will meet once a month to find out about their leadership styles, learn to give presentations, run a meeting, visit Mt. Laurel’s Trading Spaces library, tour the State Library and Legislature, and get to know NJ’s library leaders and each other.
Attendees pay $50 for the five days and agree to get involved in an NJLA committee, section or round table. Emerging Leader grads from the first two sessions are active in nearly every aspect of NJLA. Grads are also offered free coaching and enjoy reunions with the graduates of the Leadership Academy programs.

Getting to Know...
Barbara Ruth

Barbara Ruth, the newest member of the CJRLC Board, is the Media Specialist at Hooper Avenue Elementary School in Toms River. Like many school media specialists, she came to librarianship through teaching, first in NY, then in the Toms River School District. Looking for a change, she took advantage of a local extension program for school media specialist certification.
One of Barbara’s most interesting professional experiences began when an assistant superintendent at Toms River encouraged her to apply for the opportunity to work with the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. (This organization issues tests for 17 teaching areas.) She worked for a year and a half with

librarians from all over the country to develop the test for certification of media specialists. She remains involved with this organization regarding the scoring of the test.
Barbara says her biggest challenge is getting students to use all the resources of the library — not just Google. Contrary to what we often read in the media, she feels that students, more than ever, still want to take out and read books.
In her years in Toms River, Barbara has seen the area grow and change. She loves golf, swimming, walking and, of course, reading, and especially enjoys doing these things at her Myrtle Beach vacation home.
Barbara is looking forward to serving on the CJRLC Board; she sees it as an opportunity “to try to help the profession to be recognized for the value it brings” to the community.
