It’s All About Literacy!
AND
It’s All About Reading!
Two great summer programs at the beautiful Battleground Country Club!

On July 21 it’s all about literacy! High School librarians are invited to bring a staff member from their school (the curriculum supervisor would be a good choice, an administrator, or another teacher) to hear academic librarians describe what high school students are expected to know and do when they get to college. All interested librarians, of course, are welcome.
For early elementary and children’s librarians, Bonnie Kunzel, NJSL, will talk about Emergent Literacy. And for grades 3-8, Rosalind Reisner, CJRLC; Betty Carhart, Lanoka Harbor ES, LaceyTwp; and Lisa Force, Eisenhower MS, Freehold Twp. will talk about using the free databases in the curriculum.
There’s something for almost everyone. The $35 cost includes breakfast and lunch. Teachers/administrators with their librarian may come for $20.

On August 19 it’s all about reading! Join us from 9-3 and take your choice of two strands of programs.
For the K-6/children’s librarians, Dr. Robert Dornish will review what’s new in children’s literature. Joan Brady, educational media specialist at Taylor Mills School, Manalapan/Englishtown School District will lead a sharing of ideas for lesson plans and activities for K-6. Bring your favorites!
For teens/adults, Cheryl Bryan, Southeastern MS Library System, will talk about setting up a reader’s advisory program and Rosalind Reisner will talk about autobiographies as good as fiction! $50 for librarians and $70 for a team of two. (See above)

Robert Lackie is NJLA Librarian of the Year!

The first academic and the first male to be NJLA’s NJ Librarian of the Year is CJRLC’s own Robert Lackie, Rider University!
A graduate of the NJ Academy of Library Leadership (03), and active in Train the Trainer, Robert is also the academic library representative on CJRLC’s Board, and Instruction and Reference Librarian at Rider University. He recently was promoted to Associate Professor-Librarian with tenure as of September 1. And on May 14, Robert was one of two Rider faculty to be presented with the Award for Distinguished Teaching, the first Rider librarian to be so recognized! This is Robert Lackie’s year!
Best known around the state for the workshops he gives on Internet searching, staff development, and e-learning, among other topics, Robert has helped many NJ librarians to maximize usage of the Internet. His mother may have been disappointed initially when he left the Air Force for a career as a librarian, but NJ librarians are delighted and grateful!

Summer is a Great Time for a HouseCall!

Summer’s slower place makes it an ideal time to catch up on learning about the free databases. Invite Roz to your library or come to the CJRLC lab for your personal training session. We can search together for pictures and charts on Accunet/AP Photo Archive; find career information and science diagrams on Facts on File; or do topical research on EBSCOhost. For those of you who have Novelist, summer’s the perfect time to learn how to recommend “good reads” to your patrons, from children to adults. It’s easy to arrange — call Roz at (732) -409-6484 or email roz@cjrlc.org.

Letters for Literature Winners at Drumthwacket
May 19, 2004

The Governor’s Mansion, Drumthwacket, was once again the scene of celebration as the 2004 NJ winners of Letters for Literature were announced. The program is sponsored by the Library of Congress and the 46 state Centers for the Book.

Center for the Book Chair Renee Swartz honored the 64 state finalists and the winners at a reception on May 19 in Princeton. There were 2000 letters submitted in NJ this year. Individuals and organizations are invited to join the Center which is housed at Rutgers SCILS.

Ready to Jump on the

ebooks Bandwagon?

For the past 4 years, a group of CJRLC member libraries have combined resources to offer their patrons access to electronic books through netLibrary. Each library contributes $2500 annually toward the purchase of a collection of ebooks in a variety of subjects. The contributing members choose the titles and set policy. MARC records for all titles allow access through each library’s catalog, and statistics are collected to show usage.

This year 4 Infolink libraries joined the group. For each library that joins, the total number of ebooks available to the group increases.

Call the CJRLC office before July 31st if you’d like to join the netLibrary project.

Bilingual StoryTelling Programs

First it was the planning and recruiting and training. Now the stories are being told. Long Branch has held their first session in Spanish and will do Portuguese stories in the fall.

The children in the picture above are listening to the Pied Piper in English and in Hindi at the Hickory Corner Branch of Mercer County Library.

Spanish stories are being told at four libraries in Ocean County. German and Chinese stories are being told in two Monmouth County libraries. Princeton PL is starting with French and will do Japanese in the fall. Middletown PL is trying Arabic and Asbury Park may do Creole.

Children in the picture below are listening to the Spanish speaking story teller at the Trenton Public Library.

Thanks to the NJ State Library for supporting our Storytelling Grant. CJRLC is also contributing funds

"Did You Know?" graphic

Several members of the InfoLit Committee have been working on a presentation to help Media Specialists make the case to their administrators for the value of teaching information literacy skills, focusing on what college freshmen need to know. A pilot version of the program was given to the faculty at Middletown HS South with good response. You can participate in an expanded version at our summer program on July 21. Invite the people in your school who can best help you support your program!

Getting to Know...
Dr. Helen Earles

Dr. Helen Earles, librarian at the Father Center of the Union Industrial Home, fondly remembers reading under the covers with a flashlight as a child. Although her father wanted her to teach, she knew she’d rather be in the library than the classroom, a decision she still feels was right for her.

After receiving her MLIS from Rutgers, she worked as a media specialist until she was recruited for the faculty at the St. John’s University Library School in Queens, NY. She later became Dean of Instructional Resources at Manhattan Community College, then held the same position at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. Along the way, she took time out for a PhD in Educational Technology at Syracuse University.

After a career in academic librarianship, she turned her attention back to public education in East Orange as Supervisor of School Libraries and the high school English language program. When she was offered a position in the Newark Public Schools as head of School Media Centers, she saw an opportunity to spark change in this ailing system of 86 schools.

Now semi-retired, she works part-time at the Father Center, setting up a resource collection for this social services agency. She also consults at Montclair State University in their Education Department.

An avid crossword puzzler, Scrabble player, and jazz fan, Helen still enjoys staying up late at night to read. One of CJRLC’s newest members, Dr. Earles brings a wealth of experience, insight, and enthusiasm to our Region.
