Connie Paul: New Jersey Librarian of the Year! Connie Paul Named NJ Librarian of the Year

At NJLA’s Spring Conference on April 11, Connie Paul, CJRLC Executive Director, was named NJLA’s Librarian of the Year. Retiring LOTY Claudia Sumler, read the nomination and passed on the tiara, which had been augmented with a “Ask Me Why I Love What I Do” pin.

The text of Connie’s acceptance speech is on page two of this newsletter. Her project for the year will be to raise money for the NJLA Diversity Scholarship begun by Leslie Burger. In Leslie’s honor, Connie contributed $2000 to the fund and hopes to raise $18,000 more by the end of her year.

You are invited to help in that effort by contributing (and getting Friends and PTA groups to contribute).

Delivery Service Resumes May 6!

After extensive exploration of options, the four Regional Library Cooperatives signed an emergency six-month contract with CD&L on April 24. Their willingness to begin delivery in eight working days was a major factor.

   CD&L (http://www.cdl.net/
home.html
) is a publicly traded company with an excellent credit rating. During this emergency period, CD&L will deliver on a four or two day per week schedule. (In general, if you received delivery five days a week, you will get four day delivery, and if you received three day, you will get two day delivery.) They are willing to follow the basic tenets of our previous delivery manual including our continuing to package items in the same way.

We will need the intervening six months to complete the required bid process for a long-term contract.

We expect that things will be bumpy at first as CD&L figures out startup issues that our COMET drivers knew for years. We are providing them with as much information as we can gather. And CD&L has a reputation as a team player who will work with us. We have high expectations, our fingers crossed, and a sense of relief that we share with you.

Members who were on the CJRLC listserv heard about the Comet Delivery crisis as it was occurring. If you are not on the listserv, you should be. Send an email to: listserv@corrado.rider.edu. Don’t put anything on the subject line. In the body, put: sub cjrlc your name. That’s it!

NJLA Librarian of the Year Acceptance Speech

In Freedom, MO, population 22, where I was raised, the one room schoolhouse I attended did not have a kindergarten. So my report card never said, PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS. 53 years later, that’s what I take this award to mean.

The others that I have played with in my 30 years of librarianship are why I love this profession so much.

First there were the school librarians. Although I have worked part-time in public, academic, and special libraries, most of my career has been in school librarianship, and there is no other group of professionals that I respect more — they are savvy, dedicated, and great fun, and I am so proud to be one of them.

Then there are the Regional Library Cooperative Boards. I have been part of CJRLC’s for the past 12 years, but I know many of the people who have served on all four Region Boards, and they are cooperative-minded, forward thinking, and great fun, and I am so proud to be one of them.

A prime example of their energy and drive is the Recruiting initiative that CJRLC began two years ago. It was two board members, Linda Greenwood from Manchester Township HS and Kathy Holden from Rider U, who took an item from our three year plan and made it happen with the help of Faith Lundgren, Ocean County Library, Laura Gruninger, Mercer County Library, and Charlie Gross, Monmouth County Library. Our website, www.becomealibrarian.org, is known nation-wide, and they are responsible for its inception and I am so proud to be one of them.

My life changed dramatically 5 years ago when I became part of the NJ Library Network team. Being a Region Director is usually so wonderful that I would recommend it to you wholeheartedly. This past week hasn’t been as much fun as usual. But thanks to Karen Hyman, who has been a constant support and the mentor of all of us, and to Cheryl O’Connor at INFOLINK, Joanne Roukens at Highlands, and Carol Nersinger head of Library Development, our team has been working hard on the behalf of the whole library community. When Norma Blake became State Librarian just one short year ago, she promoted Region efforts like Recruiting and South’s QandAnj and challenged and supported us to make them statewide services. It was also Norma who asked me to implement a library leadership program, which I have loved. Norma, Carol, Karen, Joanne and Cheryl are a dynamic, innovative, and exciting team, and I am so proud to be one of them.

It is largely because of Leslie Burger that I became a Regional Director, and she has made being on the NJLA Executive Board this year a dizzying experience. Things happen when Leslie is in charge. One of the many things she wanted to make happen this year is a Diversity Scholarship from NJLA. So, because I believe that we need to recruit for our profession, and we need our new colleagues to reflect the communities we serve, I would like to see this scholarship become a reality. In Leslie’s honor I am contributing $1000 to the fund. In addition, I will match up to $1000 more in pledges that are received tonight. In the center of your tables should be pledge forms which you can fill out now and give to Leslie, or mail them with a check to the NJLA office.

Thanks to all of you for this wonderful award. The previous NJ Librarians of the Year are an awesome group and I am so proud to be one of them.

Note: We raised $4865 at the conference in cash or pledges. We need $20,000 for a $1000 scholarship. If you would like to contribute, send a check to NJLA, PO Box 1534, Trenton, NJ, 08607, or send it to the Region office. Mark it “Diversity Scholarship”. Don’t forget to apply to matching funds if you can get any.

Summer Program
Focuses on K-8
July 31st
9:00 AM-3:30 PM
Manasquan HS Library

The CJRLC SchoolGroup is busy planning another great summer program! This one is especially for Elementary and Middle School librarians. It’s a full day of great programs, all designed to have immediate use in your media center.
In the morning you will be able to hear from Josephine Dervan, Strathmore Elementary School, Matawan. Jo will be emphasizing Best Practices in elementary and middle school media centers. This program is always packed when she presents at the EMA Fall Conference.
Following Jo will be Maggie Hanley, Ramtown Elementary School, with suggestions for how the Media Center can support the classroom curriculum. Make your Media Center the real center of the school! Access Maggie’s materials at her website, www.howell.k12.nj.us/public/
ramtown/RamMedia.htm
.
Lunch will be provided and it will be a great opportunity to get to know other librarians. Forming your own network of peer experts is a wonderful way to get help that is practical and reliable.
After lunch, Youth Stages will help you add drama and interest to your story telling and book talks. One session is for K-4 and another is for 5-8.
What could be better on a summer day? Plan now to join your colleagues for good talk, great ideas and lunch!
Registration forms will be in the mail in early May. The cost is $35, which includes lunch. Register by sending a check or purchase order to the CJRLC office at 4400 Rt. 9 South, Suite 3400, Freehold, NJ, 07728.

JerseyCat is Coming

Beginning in July we will have a new statewide ILL system in NJ called JerseyCat. It will replace the current RSS system which was very hard to keep updated.
All libraries in the state will be eligible to participate in JerseyCat. The largest will be separate Z39.50 targets. All others will be part of a union catalog. Your library does not have to be Z39.50 compliant to be part of the union catalog, but it may be.
There will be an information session for interested librarians on May 13 at 10:00 AM at Monmouth County Library HQ in Manalapan. The first hands-on training session at CJRLC will be on June 20.
Coordinating the program will be Scherelene Schatz of the State Library Development Bureau. Her phone number is (609) 777-2059 and her email is sschatz@njstatelib.org. You may contact her office to sign up for the May 13 program or for more information about how you can participate.
JerseyCat is being sponsored by the New Jersey State Library, LSTA funds, and the Regional Library Cooperatives.
In CJRLC it will replace the OCLC group access program.
   Welcome, JerseyCat!
