Membership Meeting November 28, 2001
New Jackson Branch, Ocean County Library

Sounds of “oohs” and “ahs” could be heard from the wide eyed members of the Central Jersey Regional Library Cooperative (CJRLC) as they toured the new Jackson branch of the Ocean County Library (OCL) on November 28. The group was in Jackson for CJRLC’s Fall Membership Meeting.

The Jackson Branch held its grand opening on November 10 and for many CJRLC members this was their first visit to the new library. Moving from a 4,000 square foot building to the 24,000 square foot structure has had a positive impact on the students from Jackson Memorial High School. According to JMHS Librarian, Maureen Craddock, the students have a sense of pride about the new building. “It has given the kids a sense of importance and they are very excited about using it,” she commented.

While the general public has been enthralled with the modern interior for its aesthetics, CJRLC members viewed it from an “insiders” point of view. Ingrid Bruck, Director of Long Branch Public Library, appreciated the wooden chairs, commenting that the solid wood seats would wear in with time rather than wearing out. Others commented on how the expansive windows offered wonderful natural light and that low bookcases provided a sense of airiness. Of course everyone applauded the technology, especially the 42” inch teaching screen and the flat mirror image monitors which allow customers to see step by step computer procedures as they are performed by a staff member.

Each of the six view/ lecture/ discussion programs will consist of viewing a video specially prepared by National Video Resources, a lecture by the scholar, and a general discussion. The discussion, facilitated by the scholar, is the focal point of the program.

Lists suggesting related reading and an essay about each president, prepared by the American Library Association, will be available to the public six weeks before each program. All programs will be held at the Monmouth County Library, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan, and all programs will begin with light refreshments at 6:45 pm. All programs are free.

    (continued from page 1)

Brick High School Librarian, Dagmar Finkle, noted she was impressed that Ocean County Library has not only addressed the community’s current needs, but has designed a building that is ready to grow.

As CJRLC members from Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties toured the building, some were anxious to bring ideas back to their libraries. Dr. Mary Mallery, Assistant Library Director of the College of New Jersey, noted that CNJ is in the process of planning for a new library and the Plexiglas stairway may be perfect for them.

For CJRLC members familiar with the Ocean County Library system, it was a time of comparisons. “I used to think the Toms River branch was big. Then when they built Brick, I thought that was huge, and now this building… it’s incredible!” said Kathleen Cantoli, Emma Havens Young School Librarian.

After the tours were over, the group settled in the meeting room where they found not only plenty of room to sit, but hot coffee, delicious pastries and healthy vegetable platters. A special surprise at the meeting was the performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” sung by Little Egg Harbor Librarian, Kathy Erikson. CJRLC Executive Director Connie Paul had heard Kathy sing at the library’s grand opening. Connie was so taken by Kathy’s voice that day, she asked Kathy to perform for the meeting. Speakers at the meeting included State Librarian Norma Blake, who spoke about the New Jersey State Library. Also speaking was Micki McIntyre, HealthyNJ Head Librarian, who encouraged the librarians to utilize the HealthyNJ web site. Donna Donelon was honored for serving as head of the Library Book Evaluation Program. She has given 14 years of service. Dr. Mary Mallery was honored for her service as a member of the region.

    Notice from the State Library…

Princeton University will no longer be a Statewide Services contract library as of January 1, 2002.

The last date on which interlibrary loan, photocopy and reference requests will be accepted for processing as New Jersey Library Network requests at Princeton will be Thursday, December 20, 2001. The staff will work on all requests received on or before that date until they are completed.

After December 20, Princeton will continue to accept requests via OCLC and fax, but they will charge their normal fee of $15 per loan or photocopy transaction. OCLC users should type PUL twice in their lender string and put $15 in the max cost field to ensure that their request will be accepted for processing.
