Monmouth County Library to Hold Second Recruiting Open House
September 4, 7-9 PM

The response for the first Monmouth County Recruiting Open House was so overwhelming that a second one was scheduled immediately. So come to HQ in Manalapan for OH #2 (CJRLC's fourth!) from 7-9 PM on Tuesday, September 4. The larger meeting room will accommodate all comers. Once again librarians will tell their stories and information will be disseminated and questions will be answered. Call the Reference Desk at Eastern Branch to register: (732) 842-5995. Tell your patrons, friends, and neighbors.

This will be CJRLC’s fourth Open House. The first one was at Ocean County in Toms River in April. In early June, Mercer County Library also held a very successful Recruiting Open House under the leadership of Librarian Laura Gruninger. Over seventy people registered and the room overflowed with good humor and good information as librarians Robert Lackie, Jane Brown, Pam Price, Linda Greenwood and others told their stories.

The new website and the two new brochures answer a lot of peoples’ questions. The brochures, one for first career deciders and one for second career professionals, were designed by Tim Quinn and are available through CJRLC.

Wilson Bios Plus Illus and LearnATest Offered to CJRLC Members

Joining the suite of free and reduced cost databases are two special online products: LearnATest and Wilson Bios Plus Illus. CJRLC is subsidizing the cost of these two valuable databases for September 1 - August 30, 2002. The cost for EACH product: $350/library to a maximum of $2200/system. If a library buys both, it will be $600 for the two and $4000 for the system. For K-8 school libraries, the cost is $150 each and $200 for both.

Wilson Bios Plus Illus includes many of the standard Wilson biography databases with links to over 4,000 periodicals. Patrons can search by keywords, date of birth, profession, place of origin, gender, ethnic background or any combination. Time periods spans antiquity through the present. It features the combined coverage of more than 100 outstanding print references, including Current Biography, World Authors, etc.

LearnATest is the leading source of test preparation materials and interactive practice exams, based on official tests, that will help your patrons improve their scores on the SAT, civil service, military, and professional licensing and certification exams. They provide immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and individualized analysis of the score. Patrons may take the tests at home and get help on problem questions.

These are fabulous prices. Remote access is included.

Archives and History Day at Monmouth County Library

A dramatic performance by "Molly Pitcher," portrayed by Stacy Flora Roth, the popular freelance historical interpreter and educator, will be one of the highlights at the sixth annual Archives and History Day on October 13 at the Monmouth County Library, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan.
In conjunction with Ms. Roth's presentation at 12:30 pm, a special exhibit about Molly Pitcher will be on display in the Monmouth County Library’s lobby, October 2-31. Attendees on October 13 also will have the opportunity to compete for prizes in the annual New Jersey History Game, which this year is on the theme of Molly Pitcher.
Visitors at Archives and History Day, which begins at 9:30 am, will be able to tour the exhibition hall with 54 tabletop exhibits staffed by historical organizations from throughout New Jersey. Justin Silverman, the first prize winner at National History Day (NJ), will be displaying his project concerning the history of Ocean Gate. An Internet intermediate/advanced level workshop will be offered at 9:30 am: "Using the Internet for Genealogical Research," presented by James Raleigh, President, League of Historical Societies of New Jersey.
The 11:00 am program will include an address by Dr. Marc Mappen, Director, New Jersey Historical Commission, and awards presentations. M. Claire French, Monmouth County Clerk, will present the annual Jane G. Clayton Award for achievement in Monmouth County History to Douglas Foulks, President of the Keansburg Historical Society. The afternoon session at 1:30 pm will feature a two-hour symposium: "Collecting Local History: Resources and Case Studies."
Archives and History Day is a free event open to the public. It is organized by the Monmouth County Archives, NJ/MARAC, and NJSAA, with the support of Monmouth County, the New Jersey Historical Commission, and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

Symposium for Youth Services
What will YOU be doing for YOUTH in your libraries tomorrow?

The New Jersey State Librarian, Norma Blake, has called for a Statewide Symposium for Youth Services on October 25, 2001 at Monmouth County Library in Manalapan. Library representatives from across the state will be invited to discuss trends in library services to children and young adults and on how best to provide services on the local, regional and state levels. The keynote speaker will be MaryKay Dahlgreen, Youth Services Consultant in Library Development Services at the Oregon State Library.
The goal is to formulate recommendations for a statewide plan for youth services in libraries. This can only be done with your help. If you have a role in providing library services to children or young adults in any capacity – as a library assistant, librarian, media specialist, or a library administrator; your voice needs to be heard! Simply go to www.infolink.org/symposium.htm and respond to the online interactive form containing questions concerning critical issues for the future of library services to youth. The Symposium is the work of the Symposium for Youth Services Committee and the Infolink Region.

Youth Services Forum
October 15

The 11th Youth Services Forum will take place on Monday, October 15, 2001 at the Monmouth County Library in Manalapan from 9:00 am-3 pm. The keynote speaker will be our state librarian, Norma Blake, whose topic will be "NJSL + Youth Services -- Perfect Together." The committee again is offering an outstanding variety of topics including materials for diverse populations, magazines for children and teens, puppetry, teaching children to evaluate websites and more. The Youth Services Forum is a DOE provider. Karen Messick is the chair.
For registration information, please call Mary Pritting at the Union Public Library at (908) 851-5450,ext.3.

Our lab is responsible for more than just great training programs — it led to at least one marriage! John Hart works for the Library for the Blind and Handicapped and Harriet Orlick was the librarian at the Pennington School Library when they each signed up for an Excel class in 1998. Now they are married and the proud parents of Donovan! (CJRLC doesn’t work well as a name anyway…)

The lab classes for September are on the web site. The new schedule for October-January will be out soon. CJLRC classes are being conducted on the new wireless lab and courses are also offered at five other sites.

Getting to Know…
Carol Nersinger

The new Director of the Library Development Bureau in the State Library is Carol Nersinger, previously the Director of Highlands Regional Library Cooperative. Carol says that explaining what she does now is even harder than being a Regional Director! As Library Development Director, she is in charge of the section of the State Library which oversees grants, consultants and the network.

Born in Japan, where she lived the first ten years of her life, Carol and her family moved to upstate New York where she lived until coming to Highlands. She attended library school at Geneseo, NY, and was head of a multi-county, multi-type ILL system before becoming the director of Irondequoit Public Library in New York.

Carol loves to travel and wouldn’t mind working a year or two in another country sometime. For right now, she’s very busy where she is. Her boss, State Librarian Norma Blake, is looking at every statewide service and program. One of Carol’s first responsibilities will be to put together the planning process for the State Library and its programs which will begin in the fall.

Available for Loan from CJRLC

Two highly rated videos for Youth Services are available from CJRLC: Programming for Young Adults and Collection Development, Knowledge and Selection of Materials. They are both by Michael Cart, past president of ALA’s YALSA (the youth services division). Each video is almost an hour long. You may borrow one or both by calling CJRLC or emailing Mickey@cjrlc.org.
