World Language StoryTelling: 2005-06

World Language StoryTelling 2005-06:
A Diversity, Literacy, Recruiting Pilot Project

CJRLC will offer a second round of our successful project featuring bi-lingual story hours. CJRLC will fund up to 10 libraries to offer a bilingual story hour once a week for eight weeks. See www.cjrlc.org/storytelling.htm for information about the last cycle. Libraries who did not participate in Round One are particularly encouraged to apply.

  • The library will select its target language group from among underserved patrons in its community.

  • A library would hire a bilingual high school or college student to offer a special story hour each week for eight weeks. Stories would be told in the native language and in English.

  • The student would work 5 hours/week at $10/hour to:

    1. Conduct the story hour

    2. Meet with the librarian to plan the story hour

    3. Advertise the story hour in the appropriate community

  • The library would receive $2000:

    1. The cost of the storyteller ($400)

    2. Money to purchase books for the collection ($1000)

    3. Money for paperbacks to give participants ($500)

    4. Money for supplies (fliers, etc. $100)

  • The librarian will encourage the student to consider librarianship as a career as the student learns how to conduct a storytime.

  • Caregivers will be encouraged to attend to improve literacy skills if necessary.

  • The library will agree to keep accurate records and participate in an evaluation, which may be shared with other libraries if the program proves successful.
